Recent Illnesses:
If you have any questions contact Jessica Hager, RN (715) 289-3795, X1503) or your health care provider.
It is the time of year again for lots of illness. Handwashing, a good night’s sleep and staying hydrated are great ways to help prevent the spread of these illnesses.
We have had quite a few kids sick with vomiting and diarrhea this week. We will be reviewing good handwashing in the classrooms, but it would be helpful for you to discuss with your child as well over winter break.
How to Tell the Difference between a Cold and the Flu
“My family didn’t get our flu shots yet this year. Will it still be helpful to get the flu shot?”
YES, get your flu shot: talk to your primary health care provider as soon as possible.
There’s been a lot of news lately about contagious diseases. Hand washing is the most important thing a person can do to prevent disease outbreaks.
Some important facts about hand washing:
v Hand washing needs to be “vigorous”. This means that all surfaces of the hands need to be covered with soap/water and briefly rubbed (about 20 seconds) together, followed by rinsing under a stream of water.
v Be sure to dry hands thoroughly after washing.
o Trivia: Wet hands transfer bacteria more readily than unwashed hands.
- The use of hand washing gels does not replace the need for frequent hand washing
- Trivia: Hand washing gels are not effective on hands that are visibly dirty or contaminated with organic materials.
- Hand washing is required
- After using the bathroom
- Before, during, and after preparing food
- Before meals
- After changing a diaper
- When they are dirty
- After touching something dirty, like the garbage
- Before changing a Band-Aid or putting in contact lenses
- More often when someone at home is sick
- Before giving medicine to someone
- After handling animals, their toys, leashes, or waste
- After contact with blood, vomit, nasal secretions, or saliva

When Should I Keep My Child Home From School Because of Illness?
As general guidelines, keep your child home if:
· child has a fever-temperature above 100.4 Fahrenheit
· child is not well enough to participate in class
· you think they may be contagious to other children
· if diagnosed with certain communicable diseases such as pertussis, mumps or measles
Specific reasons to keep your child home:
· Vomiting/Diarrhea - A child with vomiting and/or diarrhea needs to stay home from school. Your child can return to school when the symptoms have stopped and the child can tolerate a regular diet.
· Rash - A rash with symptoms such as trouble breathing or swallowing, fever, or ill appearance, should be evaluated by your physician.
· Sore throat - Children can attend school with mild sore throat if no other symptoms are occurring. Any child with a sore throat associated with fever, vomiting, abdominal pain, or difficulty swallowing should be seen by a doctor. A child with strep throat needs to stay out of school until on antibiotics for 24 hours.
· Cough - Cough alone may not prevent your child from attending school unless it is interfering with a child’s sleep or ability to participate in school activities.
