Analyzing Viola
By: Anthony Bausano
Viola's Identity
Viola is a countess of sorts. She is a noblewoman and was raised like that her whole life. "For saying so, there’s gold. Mine own escape unfoldeth to my hope Whereto thy speech serves for authority, The like of him. Know’st thou this country?" This shows how she is a noble she had a ship and was able to pay the Capitan.
Viola's Gender
When Viola got into the shipwreck she needed to get money for a ride back home. But as a lady in this time period she couldn't work so she had to disguise herself as a man to work for Duke Orsino. "There is a fair behavior in thee, captain, And though that nature with a beauteous wall, Doth oft close in pollution, yet of thee, I will believe thou hast a mind that suits With this thy fair and outward character. I prithee—and I’ll pay thee bounteously— Conceal me what I am, and be my aid For such disguise as haply shall become The form of my intent. I’ll serve this duke. Thou shall present me as an eunuch to him. It may be worth thy pains, for I can sing And speak to him in many sorts of music That will allow me very worth his service. What else may hap to time I will commit. Only shape thou thy silence to my wit." This quote shows how the times were back then.
Viola's Perception
How Malvolio sees Viola as a ignorant and a "Woman Stealer". Malvolio asks "How Olivia could possibly love a man like Cesario". So really Olivia and Orsino like Viola but not a lot of other people.
Comparing myself to Viola
Me and Viola are not really alike in a lot of ways. I didn't ever need to look like a woman or a man because well I am a man. Me and Viola I feel like wouldn't run in the same circles if you understand that reference.
Viola's Identity (She's The Man)
Viola is a female soccer player and her mother wants her to be a debutant. Viola soon discovers that the girls soccer team gets disbanded. So everybody wants her to stop playing but she sets out to prove a point.
Viola's Gender (She's The Man)
So Viola "changes" her gender. She goes from being a girl on the low side of soccer to instantly being accepted by the male soccer team at another school. As a girl she would never be accepted by a male team so she did what she had to do.
Viola's Perception
Duke thought Viola was weird but he dealt with her. Not knowing Viola was Viola though he thought he was talking to Sebastian. So they all thought she was cool. Until some drama came up so she ended up being hated by Duke but the overall view of her was positive.
Similarities And Differences
I am not that similar to Viola actually. If anything we are more different. I guess Viola felt she was good at a certain sport and I am too. And for the differences I never was wanted to be a debutant. Never needed to fake my gender ever. And that's about it we are almost polar opposites
