Message from Jeff and Yolanda
Part of the growth process for us as educators is to be honest with ourselves and ask, "Do I have the mindset of an innovative educator"? In reading the Professional Learning Time (PLT) reflections, it is easy to identify those who are merely going through the motions to meet a requirement from those who are truly engaged in reflecting on their practice and performance to improve student outcomes. Once we have established compliance the next level is to grow as a teacher and become an innovative educator. Perhaps it's time to re-commit yourself to make use of the time allotted each month to become a more reflective teacher and in doing so, becoming an innovative educator.
So what does is take to be an innovate educator?
1. Are you reflective? After delivering a lesson, do you ask yourself - What worked? What didn't? What would I do differently next time?
2. Do you like to learn? Are you always learning, reading or listening? Do you view professional development as an opportunity to get better? Do you take responsibility for and initiative in your learning?
3. Are you creative and always looking for ways to change up a lesson in order to meet the needs of your students?
4. Are you connected to your students? Do you know what your students need and how to address those needs? Do you stay connected to the changes going on in your field of expertise?
5. Do you collaborate and learn from each other? An innovate educator is always having conversations and sharing. How engaged are you in your Professional Learning Community (PLC)?
6. Are you inquisitive? Are you always asking yourself - How can I improve? How can I adapt a lesson?
7. Are you principled? Do you want to make a difference in the lives of students? Are you a role model for your students? Do you care enough to make tough decisions even when it's not popular and accepted?
If you answered yes to all seven questions, congratulations you are part of the culture of innovation. If you are not quite there yet, we would encourage you to read The Innovator's Mindset by George Couros. In the book, the author encourages educators to be accountable for their own learning, have challenging conversations about what is best for their students and looking at their environment with fresh eyes.
The author, George Couros, challenges us to become better teachers by becoming innovative educators. Check out the video the teachers in Medford School District in Oregon made detailing their commitment to becoming innovative educators.
Happenings
- Congratulations to Lesa Veita Perez who was married to Jeasiel Medina on November 26th. Lesa is a 2014 graduate of LWTHS and the LWTC Medical Assisting Program, She is currently the Health Science secretary at LWTC.
Want to create a holiday-themed e-card using a green screen? There will be a workshop in the MakeIt Lab on 11/30 during all lunches. All are welcome, including all staff!
Have old technology? The MakeIt Lab is accepting donated technology during the month of December. This old technology will be part of a “Take-Apart” station in the MakeIt Lab during the month of January. Students (and staff) will be able to see how technology is made and what’s inside. It’s a lot of fun, educational, and rather therapeutic, too!
Tracy Bollinger, Shari Huene-Johnson and approximately 6-8 coaches will be on campus and doing side by side training at LWTHS on Wednesday, November 30. They will be doing two different rounds, one in the morning and one in the afternoon. The classroom visits will be around 15-20 minutes each. There is no need to change plans or alter what you are doing. Thank you in anticipation of the visit to your classroom.
