Greetings Park Terrace Families!
It is the second week of school already and the days are truly flying by!
When my kids were younger I always asked: “How was school today?” And like every other parent I got the same answer, “Good.”
The answer is always the same. And yet, I have met with students, observed classes, visited the cafeteria and playground. I have truly been astonished by how quickly our students have grown accustomed to the routines of school and how well they are doing around the entire school. If I can only get a one word answer I would hope it is, “Great!”
Our fourth grade classes are being excellent role models. Our academic specialists have been working to learn where each student is at in their learning. Our kindergarteners look like they have been here for months, and our teachers are creating amazing and engaging lessons. Our school is truly doing great and that is a testament to the hard work of our staff in creating a learner-centered environment and for our students in being ready to learn and grow each day.
If you haven’t already, please prioritize reviewing our student expectations for behavior and attendance. We’re asking every family to review and sign these agreements. These are available in Campus with instructions in the newsletter and are a great way for families to understand our school’s expectations and for students to learn their responsibility in creating a positive learning environment for themselves and their class. Given all the amazing work and learning I have seen during the past two weeks of school, much of this will reinforce our student’s positive behavior.
As we look ahead into the fall, note that we will be hosting a curriculum event for families to come learn more about the resources we use to help students learn. We know this level of transparency is important to families and we look forward to sharing. More information will be coming once we have our plans finalized.
On a personal note, I will not be at school for the next few weeks. I am having a medical procedure. Nothing major, but it does mean I will be away. John Franke, a principal on special assignment, has graciously agreed to cover for me and be here to support. Watch next week for a note from him and know I’ll be back soon.
In the meantime, I hope that everyone has a great rest of the week! Keep asking those questions to learn about all the awesome things your student is doing at school. Hopefully, you will get a positive answer and perhaps even a lot more detail than I ever received!

First Weeks Focus
The “knowing each student by name” part of our district’s vision has been on full display across schools, grade levels and classrooms in these first days of school. First graders made name tags that could hold a pencil, stand on their own, and, of course, had their names. Fifth graders were making iMovies about the “top 5 things to know about me.” High school classes were playing name games.
These first moments, days and weeks of school set the tone for the year to come. After two years of disrupted, pandemic learning, concern for academic growth and emotional and mental health is top of mind for parents and educators. That’s why even more intentional efforts to build relationships and create community are a top priority as a new year of learning begins.
Read the full story of our first weeks focus.
Learning school expectations is a big part of the first week of school.
Last week, kindergarten students read the book "What if Everybody Did That?" They then created posters to show things they think everyone should do at school!
Some of them include: Everyone should listed to music and hug. Everyone should listen to the teacher. Everyone should share, be kind and help. Everyone should make dinosaurs!
These kindergarteners are only on their 5th day of school and are already helping to build a positive learning environment!
