Academy of the Arts at Bransom
November 6-10 (School Days 53-57)
A Note From Your Principal
Increasing the reading levels of our students is such an important goal because we believe that when students are reading at or above their grade level, their achievement in every subject should increase. It is difficult for students to read and understand math word problem and vocabulary when they read below level. It is difficult to read and comprehend science and social studies concepts when students can not successfully read the material independently. It is nearly impossible for students to write on level without having a good grasp of reading on level. One's ability to read effects everything they do.
As adults we take reading for granted. We've been doing it for years. Our students have not and they need more practice than we might think. This is why your reading with your child and listening to your child read every night is so important. In fact their success may depend on it. Show them how much you care about their education and simply READ!
EVERYONE TAKE TIME TO:
Read the Menu
Read the Recipe
Read the Signs
Read the Church Bulletin
Read the Receipt
Read the Directions
Read the Map
Read the Closed Captions (Mute the TV and Read the Dialogue)
Read the Novel
Read the Bluebonnet Books
Read the Library Books AND
Read the Home Readers (Over and Over Again)
Read Music
There are other important but simple things to do with your child that can make a great deal of difference for them at school. You can help them pay attention to their handwriting. You've heard "Practice Makes Perfect." Really "Practice Makes Permanence." If you practice something wrong time and time again, you will eventually do it wrong permanently. The thing I see that needs attention in handwriting especially for our very young are names. Remember a capital letter at the beginning and lower case letters to follow.
I know third grade teachers are teaching cursive writing this year. Encourage your children 3rd grade and up to practice their cursive. Write them a note in cursive and have them write back to you.
EVERYONE IN PRINT OR CURSIVE TAKE TIME TO:
Write a grocery list
Write a "I'm Thankful..." list
Write a book review
Write a book recommendation
Write a letter to Grandma and Grandpa
Write a "Thank You" note for a gift
Write a story for a random picture
Write a recollection of a trip or event
Write captions for vacation pictures
Write a note to a teacher/coach (school, church, sports)
Write a letter to your favorite author
Write a letter to your favorite artist
Write a Christmas list AND
Write a letter to Santa
Write lyrics to a song
Write music
You matter so much when it comes to your child. The character your child displays, the attention to grades your child has, the grit and determination your child possesses, the respect your child show others, and the compassion for the less fortunate your child encounters is affected by YOU. We appreciate the positive upbringing you have provided for your child. We also know that raising children is hard. If you need assistance with difficult situations, we may be able to help. Our counselor, Mrs Sheri McCrory is a great resource for guidance for adults as well as children in difficult situations. She is our full time counselor and would love to hear from you.
I want to say "Thanks" to everyone who attended our first S.M.A.R.T. (Science-Math-Art-Reading-Technology) Night. Our teachers and staff worked hard to prepare a special night for you and your family and we hope you enjoyed the event. We plan to build on the night to be even better next year.
In closing, I want to remind you that I know you have a choice in the education for your child and we appreciate you choosing the Academy of the Arts at Bransom. We want to continue to be your first choice in schools. Thank you for your support of our campus and I look forward to seeing you around and about our campus making a better place to learn, create, and grow.
With a Grateful Heart,
Mrs. Burchfield

- Once the campaign is over and tabulations are done with a $20,000 goal met, Mrs. Burchfield will kiss that pig.
The PTO is tracking the donations by classroom so check out your child's class progress in the school foyer everyday.

READING TIP of the WEEK from Mrs. Jackson
Boost family reading by involving loved ones who live far away. UsingSkype or another video conferencing program, have your child share a book with relatives. Make sure the book is one that your reader has read a few times already; repetition is a fantastic way to enhance reading skills. Younger readers love to show-off their fluency and oral reading builds confidence.

Parents, thanks for sharing your pictures with Mrs. Moore for her door display and bulletin board. Sports definitely plays a big part of our students lives and we honor that.
Jessica Scott, RN says...
The 4th graders had a 97.27% in attendance last week. The campus percentage was 95.9%. Our campus goal is to maintain at least 97% attendance each week. Let's get that average back up.
Don't Forget...
Speaking of jackets and coats, students may only wear solid red, white, blue or black jackets in the classroom. This is part of our BISD Standard Dress Code. These jackets can not have logos or other graphics. Of course they can wear any overcoats outside on cold days but not in the academic classrooms or enrichment classrooms.
