Scrapie Program Changes from USDA
We wanted to make you aware of some changes in our Scrapie Tag program due to Federal budget cuts in the Scrapie program. We are unable to provide any taggers, or plastic tags free of charge. We will continue to provide free metal tags. With 4H season coming up, it is prudent to prepare our customers so they have compliant identification. We will not be able “singularly” hand out tags on an as needed basis as we did before, because we also cannot order plastic tags for our office, or give out taggers from here. More than ever, it is important for 4-Hers purchasing sheep and goats for their projects to make sure the seller has the animals identified when they are sold.
We have attached a copy of the packet of information we include when a new flock id is established. It includes information on where plastic tags and taggers can be purchased. It also includes information on where the tagger for applying the free metal tags can be purchased (505S tagger). Finally, we also included a new order form. ALL fields should be filled, including current flock/herd size. Please distribute the information as you see necessary so we don’t disappoint anyone when the 4H crunch begins…
Owners should still call our office to be assigned a Scrapie Flock ID number, during which they can order the metal tags and we can give them the phone number to get the tagger. Otherwise, we will send them their flock id letter and the attached information for purchasing their own plastic tags/tagger.
Please call USDA with any questions - 402-434-2302
