Meet the Keynote Speaker
Dr. Steven Hall is a twenty-five-year US Air Force Veteran, who has served in joint-international commands throughout the globe and has extensive experience working within diverse cultures. In addition to having a comprehensive working knowledge of regulatory governance and compliance at both Federal/State levels, Dr. Hall also has wide-ranging background experience in post-secondary education and workforce development and has served as senior administrator in Arizona, California and Texas college/university systems.
He received both his B.S. Business, Applied Management and Masters Public Administration (MPA) in Government & Policy degrees from Grand Canyon University – Ken Blanchard College of Business and received his Ph.D. in Higher Educational Leadership from Trident University International.
Dr. Hall joins the Mayor’s Office and the City of Houston to continue a rich tradition of public service as a key advocate for collaborating with community stakeholders, higher education administrators, and support organizations to seek out, further develop and champion viable solutions aimed at overcoming societal challenges, improving the quality of life and ensuring the social well-being for all.

Meet the Panelists
Jane E. Cheeks, Director of Human Resources
Jane E. Cheeks is a tenured HR management professional with diversified leadership successes in both public and corporate sectors. Jane has served the City of Houston for 18 years, specializing in the operation of core Human Resources functions. As the Director of the City’s Human Resources department, she currently manages over 270 HR professionals who ensure the City’s employees and citizens receive essential services and employee benefits. Jane’s keen regard for customer service and her employees, as well as her commitment to public service, are elements that drive her success. She continues to serve the city by working to reform succession planning and the standardization of HR practices, policies and procedures.
Darien Helton, Deputy Assistant Director (Client Services)
Darien Helton is the Deputy Assistant Director over the Client Relations Section in the HR Department. He has been an employee of the City of Houston for 28 years. He hold two certifications for the Society of Human Resource Management (SHRM SCP and SPHR), designating him as a Senior Professional in Human Resources. He received both his Bachelor’s Degree and Master’s Degree from the University of Houston.

Come engage in a one-hour session gaining the answers to all your questions related to career development, advancement, lessons and strategies for long-term career success. The idea is to dissect what, how and why human resources professionals recruit, screen, interview and place workers; in addition to, the management perspective of planning, directing and coordinating people. 5th Annual Career Development Symposium
City employees who are seeking encouragement and empowerment to go further and higher in their careers are invited to attend the 5th Annual Career Development Symposium.
The Career Development Symposium is an annual open-house training event for City employees, held in collaboration with our strategic partners. Every year, this event is organized to assist you on the road to career success by providing career tools, academic resources and professional development opportunities that will support the achievement of future career goals. You will gain access to workshops facilitated by career professionals and career counseling provided by our partnering educational institutions. The one-day event is intended to expose you to information that will incite career readiness, encourage career planning and provide educational resources to support your future goals with the City.
Please mark your calendar if you are seeking to:
Acquire a first-time bachelor or post-graduate degree for professional development
Pursue continuing education courses to assist in the development and enhance of your knowledge and skills directly related to your professional occupation
Build your professional brand using resources, such as resumes, interviews and job searches
