LETTERS ABOUT LITERATURE WRITING CONTEST

Letters About Literature is a reading and writing contest for students in grades 4-12. Students are asked to read a book, poem or speech and write to the author (living or dead) about how the book affected them personally. Letters are judged on state and national levels. Tens of thousands of students from across the country enter Letters About Literature each year. If you are in grades 4-12, you are eligible to enter the Letters About Literature reading and writing contest.

The 2015-2016 Letters About Literature contest for young readers is made possible by a generous grant from the Dollar General Literacy Foundation, with additional support from gifts to the Center for the Book in the Library of Congress, which promotes the contest through its affiliate Centers for the Book, state libraries and other organizations.

Below is a promotional video featuring the Texas author Nikki Loftin, and a PDF attachment for contest guidelines. If you have any questions, please email Leah Greer (lgreer@weatherfordisd.com).

The Tison Library will gladly accept contest entries until THURSDAY, DECEMBER 15TH and will mail off all entries by Friday, December 16th.

WHAT'S HAPPENING AT TISON...

Big image

In November, the library hosted a "book tasting" for all students visiting with their English class! At the "book tasting," students sat at tables with "menus" and a stack of books in the center of the table. They were asked to read the first few pages of at least two books at the table and rate the likability of each book. They wrote their critique of each book in their menu. Many students discovered new books to check out and enjoy!

TISON ROO IN THE SPOTLIGHT

Alexis McBride -- 7th Grader

Alexis has been nominated by her ELA teacher, Coach Light, to be recognized in the Tison newsletter! Here are her comments:

"With her quiet yet determined patience, she is a willing leader and great student. Whether discussing books or helping others in the classroom, Alexis always has a great attitude. She actually explains things to others and does not get frustrated. She is simply a pleasure to have in class!"

In order to get to know Alexis a little better, she completed a simple survey and below are her answers:

What do you most look forward to when you wake up in the morning and why?

Hanging out with my friends

In a word, describe school.

What do you like to do in your free time and why?

When you think about life after you graduate from school (high school or college) what career sounds goods to you and why?

Something that works with animals or a photographer
