Eastwood Academy Newsletter September 2018

First Week Success!

Our first week back to school was a huge success! I saw so many happy faces and got to hear a lot of summer stories. It warms my heart to hear you all had the opportunity to rest and recharge. I know some of you guys had a rough summer and may have experienced loss. For these things, I am deeply sympathetic and hope all of our parents and students alike understand the Eastwood staff and administration is here to listen, offer support, and guide our students on the path to success no matter the circumstances.

This month's bulletin is filled with resources and upcoming event dates. Please be sure to subscribe to the newsletter so that it can be sent to your email automatically each month.

Campus Safety & Security

Student ID Badges

At Eastwood, we take your child's safety and security very serious. For this reason, it has become increasingly important for us to be able to immediately identify students and staff members on campus. Thus, all students and staff are now required to wear their official Eastwood/HISD identification card visible at all times.

Beginning Tuesday, September 4th, all students are required to wear their school issued photo IDs connected to a lanyard. Student IDs are distributed every school year, so the one worn must be the most current ID issued by Eastwood. IDs must be worn on a lanyard around the neck for full visibility at all times while on campus.

If the ID is forgotten at home, a temporary badge will be given by Ms. Chavez or Ms. Morales. If lost, a replacement ID can be purchased for $5.00.

Parking Passes

Students who drive to campus, wishing to use the Eastwood parking lot will be required to have a current parking pass by September 10, 2018. Students who park their vehicles in the school lot must print and fill out the Parking Contract (file attached below and located on the HUB). The driver will present the form to our campus Police Officer Rendon along with proof of insurance and valid driver's license. After the officer signs to verify driving credentials, the form should be taken to Ms. Brenda Morales who will accept the $25 payment and assign a parking pass.

Off Campus Lunch

Traditionally, Eastwood Academy has allowed our junior and senior students to leave campus for lunch time when (and only when) the lunch period exceeds 30 minutes. Qualified students may do so only after meeting the guidelines outlined in our Student Handbook (I will include that document in this bulletin as well). As with every school year, we will begin handing out off-campus lunch passes after all juniors and seniors have turned in their Student Informational/Enrollment Packets. The off-campus lunch form must also be signed by a guardian despite the age of the student. Completed forms should be turned in to the main office with Ms. Chavez.

Parent Volunteers Needed!

We need help from parents who have the ability and willingness to assist us with various duties on campus. Please read through the opportunities carefully, and sign up for whichever you are able to help with. You can also email me for more information if needed.

  • Study Lab Supervision: This role would involve the physical supervision of 15-30 Eastwood students during a 45 or 90 minute class period. Students will work independently on assignments from various classes. The supervisor is simply expected to walk around the room periodically to ensure students are on task with school work and that students do not leave without permission. Times and dates can be found on the sign up form.
  • Drop Off Traffic Director: This role would involve helping us to direct drop off traffic in the morning from 8:00 a.m. - 8:35 a.m.
  • Pick Up Traffic Director: This role would involve helping us to direct pick up traffic in the afternoon from 3:50 p.m. - 4:25 p.m.
  • Donations: Our Engineering teacher, Ms. Conflitti, is looking for scrap/heavily loved appliances or electronic equipment! Our students will take your heavily loved or non-working appliances or electronics, break them into parts, and refurbish as part of their curriculum in the classroom. If you have junk appliances lying around you've been meaning to throw out or fix, but haven't had a chance, we'll take them off your hands!
