From the principal's desk/Desde el escritorio de la directora:
Greetings Zarrow Families,
It seems hard to believe it is already time for parent teacher conferences and fall break. We are excited to have the opportunity to speak with you about your student’s progress. We have seen so much progress already and are excited about where we are headed. As a team we are working on setting goals for the school around things like attendance, chronic absences, and academic growth. The Panorama SEL (Social/emotional learning) student surveys have been completed for 3-5th grades. We will be setting goals based on those results after fall break. Returning from fall break we will also be coming together for our PD which will focus on SEL for the first half of the day and the second half of the day will be a deep dive into our curriculum: Eureka math and Benchmark/Adelante.
I will be traveling to Costa Rica on October 12th with our exchange ambassadors. I will be returning to work on October 22nd for our PD day. I am excited for the opportunity to meet the Costa Rica administrators and see the campus where our ambassadors will be spending the month. I hope everyone has a wonderful fall break!
Saludos,
Sra. Marquez
Saludos,
Sra. Marquez
Counselor's Corner:
Greetings Zarrow families, once again I am amazed at how the school year is going by so quickly and it’s time for the October newsletter. October is National Bully Prevention Month. Below is what teachers have posted in their classrooms defining bullying.
Is it Bullying? What is It?
TEASING
• Everyone is having fun
• No one is getting hurt
• Everyone is participating equally
CONFLICT
• No one is having fun
• There is a possible solution to the disagreement
• Equal balance of power
MEAN MOMENT
• Someone is being hurt on purpose
• Reaction to a strong feeling or emotion
• An isolated event (does not happen regularly)
BULLYING
• Attacked physically, socially, and/or emotionally
• Unequal balance of power
• Happens more than once over a period of time
• Someone is being hurt on purpose
Cyberbullying can be a platform for intense public humiliation reaching outside the walls of the school building. Posts can be can be ever present, saved and shared multiple times. When I taught computers, and I still tell students, to think of their parent or grandparent reading what you have posted and if they would be happy about what you are writing and know that it could potentially always be somewhere out in cyberspace.
Please see the attached flyer for a seminar regarding Bullying.
This year Sra. Aubert and I are serving as your Building Test Coordinators. We have almost (a few make-ups remain) completed the MAP (Measure of Academic Progress) test. The Kindergarten through 2nd grade students will take the assessment in Spanish, instead of CPAA as in the past. Third through 5th grades tests are administered in English. They will take the test again before winter break and at the end of the year.

Dear Families, Administrators and Teachers:
The Zarrow International School PTA knows that a strong partnership among our families, school leaders and community members is important to the success of our students and school. That’s why we are participating in the National PTA School of Excellence program, which grows partnerships between PTAs and schools to enrich the educational experience and overall well-being of all students.
At a National PTA School of Excellence, families feel welcomed and empowered to support student success, and PTA is a key partner for continuous school improvement. We feel Zarrow International and our PTA can achieve that together—and the result will be national, state and community-wide visibility for the positive impact we are making together at ZIS.
We need your help! As part of the process, National PTA requests feedback from families, administrators and teachers at two points in the school year—the beginning and the end. Your feedback will help National PTA generate a customized guide which will provide specific recommendations for improving our family-school partnership and achieving excellence.
Please take 5-10 minutes to reflect on your experience at this school and complete the attached survey. Mark an “X” in the box that most accurately expresses how you feel about your experience. This survey is completely anonymous. Please complete the survey online or return it survey to the PTA box (if you require a paper copy, it will be made available in the office) by October 5, 2018.
Does this sound like a PTA program you’d really like to help with? Join us! Contact Stacey Woolley to learn more!
Sincerely,
Stacey Woolley, Zarrow International School PTA President
Sra. Denise Márquez, Zarrow International School Principal
Thank you for your continued support and collaboration as we work toward becoming a National PTA School of Excellence!

Queridas familias, administradores y maestros:
Atentamente,
Stacey Woolley, Presidente-Zarrow International School PTA
Sra.
