Athletics Weekly Summary
Week of: October 14th-October 19th
Written by: Caroline Howard
Well, well, well folks, it seems as if it is that time of the year to take the screens out and rumble through the attic for that old winter coat. But hey, who said that’s a bad thing! I personally found a $5 bill in my pocket the other day! Anyways, the cold just brings us more exciting games from our Fall sports! So, away we go!
On Friday, Field Hockey traveled to Barnstable to face off against the Red Raiders. Fans really needed to break out the under armour for this game! Despite a hard fought game, the Sharks took a tough loss to Barnstable 4-1. Solid effort by Monomoy’s Elena Fritsch, Nikki Awalt and Alexis Culver! This defensive trio really gave the Raiders a run for their money! Nice job girls!
As Monday rolled around, Boys Golf senior captain, Ian Johnson played in the South Sectional Golf Tournament. Johnson finished his round with a solid score of a 94! Nice job Ian and a great season for Boys Golf!
Monday also brought around a win for both the Boys and Girls soccer teams! The Sharks seemed to dominate over the Cape Cod Tech Crusaders in two brutal battles. For the girls, they lit up the field leaving the scoreboard reading 7-0! Goals scored by our very own Audrey Smith, with two goals and an assist! Following Smith with goals in the net were Elizabeth Ryan, Lily Daniels-Diehl, Rees Hart, Josie Ganshaw and Melissa Velasquez! Nice win girls! As for the Boys, the Sharks swam into their victory 3-0! Goals by AJ Williams, Sam Chase, and Connor Deveau! Great job boys!
The Sharks continued their winning streak with the Field Hockey team! The Sharks faced off against the Nauset Warriors on Monday in a downright freezing game if I do say so myself! Boy was this game very back and forth! The Warriors came out strong, but the Sharks were hungry for a win! That’s right, the final score of the game was 2-0!
Tuesday came with harsh rain and hail. Why am I not surprised folks? All games were postponed!
On Wednesday, Girls soccer was home for their senior night game! A special Shark shoutout to our seniors: Katie Ganshaw, Abby Wallace, Abby Higgins, Sam Mahoney and Lucy Ryan! The Sharks faced off against Sturgis East, who came out ready to play. At the half, the scoreboard still read 0-0. However, we all knew these Sharks would come out on top! As the referee blew the last whistle of the game, the girls had won 2-0! Goals scored by Rees Hart and Abby Wallace! Great game girls! That same night, Boys Soccer also played Sturgis East. A close game left fans with short nails as it was nail-biting to see these two teams play against each other! But, the Sharks came back and put one in the back of the net, making the final score 1-0. Great effort boys!
As for Thursday, the soccer teams continued their streak! The Boys faced off against Cape Cod Academy at home. The Sharks came onto the field ready to play as they left the CCA goalie with six balls behind him. But, CCA came back in the final two minutes of the game and put one in the back of the net. A great game by Monomoy Boys Soccer goalie, Ted Clifford! An awesome job boys! As for the Girls, it was quite a game! The girls took a bus ride over to the DY Dolphins lagoon. Both teams really TIED up their laces for the game ending with a final score of 3-3! A great game by the girls and an awful pun by myself! Woohoo!
Those weren’t the only wins the Sharks walked away with on Thursday! Football played a chilly night game under the lights against Diman High School. This was a close game if I ever saw one folks! The Sharks walked away with a win with the final score reading 14-12. Great win boys!
As for tonight, Field Hockey faces off against the Raiders under the lights at 6 o’clock! Come out and support your Sharks! And if that doesn’t make you want to jump out of your seat, there will also be a bake sale! Any reason is a good reason folks!
Well, that is all of the results I have for you now folks! So, don't get lost in your attics trying to find those coats and pop the glass doors in because the temperatures are dropping! As always, I am Caroline Howard and Go Sharks!
Monomoy Girls Soccer seniors (left to right): Abby Higgins, Abby Wallace, Katie Ganshaw, Sam Mahoney, and Lucy Ryan! Great game girls!

Shark Shoutout...
Thanks to a good deal of persistence on the part of Dan Cogswell (he set up a computer, configured it, added a printer, loaded the software and worked with me to troubleshoot and update the software), AP Psych students will actually "enjoy" the opportunity of taking challenging tests and honing their skills. Without this, the course probably couldn't have run as an independent study for these students. He is to be commended. Thanks, Dan! -Matt Brown
- After school, my student, Brienna Notaro noticed there was water on the floor, and she wiped it up. She said, I just don't want people to get hurt. What a wonderful student! -Ms. Melinda Jones
- Shout out to Melissa Maguire for leading some powerful Social-Emotional Learning activities in the Peer Leads class on October 17th. The students and I are grateful that you taught us how to identify our own islands of competence and those of our peers and colleagues! - Ms. Liz Hoff
- Shout out to Janet Ferro, Katie Kelly, Claire Hooper for always managing to multitask and help others despite the interruptions to your busy days. - Ms. Liz Hoff
- Shout out to the Peer Leads class for collaborating on a beautiful faculty and staff appreciation project, and for bringing it to fruition through perseverance, passion, critical thinking, and problem-solving. - Ms. Liz Hoff
- Shout out to all the students who are volunteering their time to help out with school and community events. We appreciate your dedication to others! - Ms. Liz Hoff
- It was such a pleasure to see the Monomoy kids represented at the Human Rights Academy. They did a wonderful job and had some great ideas that they will be sharing with you. Please give Bernadette Waystack the advisor a high five as well as the students: Laura Brown, Emma Santoni, Caitlyn and Molly Daley, Abby Anderson, Drew Ryan, and Aidan Kotolski. -Ms. Angie Chilaka
- Shark shout out to Mrs. Ferro for taking time out of her busy schedule to print photos for our faculty and staff appreciation posters. -The students of Peer Leads
- The warmest thank you to my entire Monomoy family for all of the love and well-wishes over this past week. I'm so grateful for the flowers, cake, hugs, gifts, and words of wisdom...I feel blessed to work with so many people who share these happy moments with me both within and outside of the walls of this school! -Ms. Caitlyn Coughlin
- Greetings, we’ve not met but I’ve been to your school many times. I write to share my fine experiences with your school. As a former (20 years) secondary principal of a school in Springfield, MA with 1510 students, I usually don’t like to go ‘back to school’. Your teachers and staff that I talk with are always positive and enthusiastic about Monomoy. My visits to are usually for two purposes. I’m the Military Officers’ Association Scholarship chair. In recent years, we’ve increased our pot of scholarship to $12k annually and with 50-60 aps per cycle, I have to say that Monomoy seniors are the MOST prepared and competent applicants. Secondly, I’m the US Naval Academy Blue and Gold officer for your school and the lower/middle cape. Your students that apply to Navy have outstanding questions and know what they want to be in life. Due to the competition for an appointment, very few Monomoy seniors get offers but are highly motivated and coached. Mrs. Casey always has a fine handle on guidance activities and is a pleasure to deal with. -Tom Keating, CDR retired.
