No School & No After School Enrichment 2/20 - President's Day

Did you know...

Presidents’ Day is an American holiday celebrated on the third Monday in February. Originally established in 1885 in recognition of President George Washington, it is still officially called “Washington’s Birthday” by the federal government. Traditionally celebrated on February 22—Washington’s actual day of birth—the holiday became popularly known as Presidents’ Day after it was moved as part of 1971’s Uniform Monday Holiday Act, an attempt to create more three-day weekends for the nation’s workers. While several states still have individual holidays honoring the birthdays of Washington, Abraham Lincoln and other figures, Presidents’ Day is now popularly viewed as a day to celebrate all U.S. presidents past and present.

Family Fun Night Success!

The 2017 Family Fun Night was enjoyed by the largest attendance on record! It was fun seeing 400+ Maple Dale families skating, sharing food and socializing together. What a great group of Peace Builders!

A special thank you to Amanda Hughes and Greta Urbanek for organizing the event. The evening wouldn't have happened without the help of many parents. Thanks again to Diane and Brian VanderBrink, Jenny Barker, Amanda Hughes, Greta Urbanek, Harshana Patel, Tanya Henry, Jennifer Carrle, Jill Reutter, Kathy McGrath, Liz Dolan, Jennifer Thiel, Mark Parzynski, Meredith Towbin, Tiesha Frazier and Lauren Hoeltje for their volunteer efforts. We're already looking forward to doing it again next year!

Used Collegiate wear - all children and adult sizes!

Our goal is to collect enough used collegiate wear for each student at Winton Hills Academy (our “sister school”) to be able to own something with the name of a college on it.

WHA Principal and staff continuously encourage WHA students to think beyond their neighborhood - to dream BIG!

They have had several success stories over the years of students going onto college.

If you have outgrown any collegiate wear, please send it into Maple Dale between February 27-March 3.

Help Our School Win

Our school has the opportunity to win $2,500, and we need your help! Our school is participating in an energy conservation program from Duke Energy, and through this program, our families and staff can request a FREE Energy Kit to be delivered to their homes. For every 100 kit requests from our school, we’ll automatically win $250, and the school that requests the most kits will win $2,500! Please help us out and request your FREE kit! Go to or call 1-855-386-9548.

King Arthur's Camelot

Last weekend, our very own fourth grader, Simon Huth, performed in the Cincinnati Ballet production of King Arthur's Camelot. We are very proud to have this young and very talented dancer here at Maple Dale. Way to go, Simon!

One Author, One School

For the past several years, Maple Dale has had a winter tradition of reading the same book school-wide. This program, called “One Book, One School”, has provided the opportunity for families to enjoy reading some great titles together such as The One and Only Ivan and Gooseberry Park. This year, our tradition will look at bit different.

On February 10th, Maple Dale kicked off “One Author, One School” with a school wide assembly. Great excitement was generated about author, Candace Fleming’s, visit on March 7th. Students are geared up and READY TO READ! In lieu of a chapter book this year, classes will share two of her beautiful picture books with their families. Instead of each family getting their own picture books to keep, students will take turns reading the books at home, and then return them to school to pass along to others. Some families and classrooms may choose to listen to the books read aloud online via the link below as well.

Both books, Boxes for Katje and Papa’s Mechanical Fish are wonderful for children of all ages and have beautiful messages about kindness, perseverance, creativity, and gratitude. Additional books will be read in the regular classroom and during students’ media center special.

Sharing books with children is a perfect way to create life-long readers! Check out Mrs. Smith's Link and learn even more about Candace Fleming and opportunities to blog about reading! Be on the look-out for news about a school community public service project!

Lastly, we’d like to send along an enthusiastic thank you to our PTO for purchasing two of Candace Fleming's books for each Maple Dale classroom!
