What is IPEP?

Irvine Parent Education Programs (IPEP) are FREE seminars and educational workshops offered to Irvine parents throughout the school year. Our goal is to empower parents with the skills and strategies necessary to become active participants in their child’s education. IPEP offers a variety of workshops focused on topics important to parents of IUSD students. Experienced teachers and instructors facilitate the interactive workshops, engaging participants in conversations and hands-on activities. We invite you to register for one or more of the IPEP Winter Parent Workshops below.

IUSD Special Programs and Services

When: February 21st, 2017 (9-10:30am)

Who: Designed for parents of K-12 students with disabilities

What: This workshop is for parents who would like to know more about the programs and services IUSD has to offer students with disabilities. Parents will learn about the referral process, IEPs, parent rights, and how parents can support their child at home.

Welcome to IUSD!

When: February 28th, 2017 (9-10:30am)

Who: Designed for parents of K-12 students who are NEW to Irvine

What: In this workshop parents will have an introduction to IUSD programs and services offered to parents and students acquiring English. Other topics will include placement after taking the CELDT, phases of language development, and celebrating bilingualism.

Reading and Writing in Elementary (Grades 3-6)

When: March 1st, 2017 (9-10:30am)

Who: Designed for parents of students in or entering grades 3-6

What: Join us for an interactive workshop where you will become like a student in grades 3-6 and participate in a close reading lesson at the upper elementary level. We will discuss reading strategies and academic writing in response to literature. This class will also include an opportunity to look at resources you can use at home to help your student. Join us as we take a closer look at close reading!

Reading and Writing in Secondary (Grades 7-12)

When: March 7th, 2017 (9-10:30am)

Who: Designed for parents of students in or entering grades 7-12

What: Reading and writing in the secondary grades is becoming more rigorous and the stakes are high because of the California Common Core Standards. Students are expected to think critically, problem solve, collaborate with their peers and produce writing that communicates their ideas clearly. In this workshop you will experience a sample reading and writing lesson and learn about resources so you can help your child at home.

Preparing for Literacy in Kindergarten

When: March 15th, 2017 (9-10:30am)

Who: Designed for parents of students entering Kindergarten in fall of 2017

What: In the Irvine Unified School District, we believe the goal of kindergarten is to promote a joy of learning in a positive and nurturing environment, which creates critical thinkers, effective oral communicators, and lifelong learners. Join us in learning how to support your child in their journey towards becoming proficient readers and writers!

Why Middle School Counts

When: March 21st, 2017 (9-10:30am)

Who: Designed for parents of students in or entering grades 6-8

What: In this workshop parents will learn about the developmental issues and stages they should expect from their middle school student. Topics will include: academics, cognitive development, social/emotional changes, and community resources.

Naviance: WHO? WHAT? WHERE? HOW?

When: March 24th, 2017 (9:30-11am)

Who: Designed for parents of students in or entering grades 7-12

What: Naviance is an online resource for parents and students used at all IUSD middle and high schools. This workshop will provide an overview of how this program is used by counselors to support students in planning for high school, college, career and beyond.
