Halloween Pumpkin Character Contest
Dear Parents, Students, and Teachers,
This year, Mrs. Trusty and Mrs. Lambert have decided to combine their love of reading and art into one spooky Halloween contest! All students and staff are invited to decorate a pumpkin like their favorite book character. It’s easy and fun for the whole family! Students and staff may bring a decorated pumpkin to school to enter it into our contest from October 19th – October 23rd.
Contest Rules:
- ABSOLUTELY NO CARVED PUMPKINS! Pumpkins may be painted, hot glued, colored, etc., but please no carved pumpkins. They can get smelly and gross!
- Pumpkins should represent a favorite book character. On the entry form, you must write the title and author of the book.
- This is a home project and pumpkins should be done mostly by students. Assistance from parents is great, but we would love to see our students' creativity!
- Do not write your name anywhere on the pumpkin. Make sure that you fill out the attached form when you turn in your pumpkin.
- This year pumpkins will be judged at the St. Paul Halloween Party on Sunday, October 25th.
- Pumpkins will be judged according to the following categories. Winners will receive a dress down pass.
- ►Pre-K thru 2nd Grade “Family” Pumpkins
- ►3rd Grade thru 5th Grade Student Pumpkins
- ►6th-8th Grade Student Pumpkins
- ►Faculty & Staff Pumpkins
- ►Pumpkins will be sent home from school by Friday, October 30th. Any pumpkin remaining will be discarded.
Happy Decorating!
--Mrs. Trusty and Mrs. Lambert
How much "scary stuff" can my young child handle?
Some kids like scary stuff and some kids hate it. Movies with fearsome images, intense danger, loud noises, and -- above all -- blood and gore can create all sorts of problems, so it's wise to take it slowly. Children younger than 7 can't easily distinguish between fantasy and reality, even if you tell them it's not real. You will know if your kids have become too frightened when they start having sleep problems, irrational fears, and obsessions with, for example, zombies.
Disturbing images and sounds can affect vulnerable kids for years. When scary surprises, such as the one at the beginning of Finding Nemo, crop up suddenly in a movie, check in with your kids. Because they're caught up in the emotion of fear, they may miss the fact that a scene has a safe resolution. Feel free to leave the movie theater, turn off a show, or otherwise shut down something you think is agitating. Talk about it, comfort your kid, and use it as a gauge for next time. These tips can help:
- Choose with care. Kids over 5 may like haunted houses, mysteries, and things popping out everywhere, but stick to animation, which helps them realize it's fantasy. Be careful with monsters, skeletons, aliens, and zombies. Avoid any dangerous material involving characters near their age.
- Be prepared for when things go bump in the night. If your kid is frightened at bedtime, give him physical comfort, a glass of water, or a distraction. Kids 2 to 7 respond well to magical remedies and nightly rituals, such as cleaning the monsters out of the closet.
- Avoid shows and movies in which characters use violence to resolve conflict. But if it comes up, talk about alternative ways that characters could have solved a problem.
- Watch the clock. Avoid potentially frightening stuff (including serious loss, scary suspense, bullying, coercion, and portrayals of psychological dysfunction) right before bedtime.
A Google A Day
A fun activity for you, and for you to do with your students, is agoogleaday.com. Typically I have to think about what my search terms are going to be. I can not just copy and paste the question into a Google search. I have to break down the question to figure out what it is really asking and determine what keywords in the search will get me there.
- Practicing a Google a day will help you to sharpen your search skills and also to see examples of more complex types of questions.
