Greetings from the Principal
Dear Riverview families,
Did you know that the act of being thankful can have an impact on student achievement among other things? Recent research has shown that gratitude is a protective factor linking a student’s academic and social well being. Studies show that grateful youth have higher grade point averages, experience more positive emotions, and ultimately lead more meaningful adult lives. Practicing gratitude at a young age promotes the development of self-control, which is so important to lifelong success (Education Update, ASCD).
Here at Riverview, gratitude is embedded into our school and community culture and practices. Helping students to be aware of the positive factors in their lives and teaching them to help with the needs of others begins in the classroom, and it is exemplified through exploratory class projects, teacher role models, Service Club/volunteer opportunities, and PTA-sponsored community service activities. For example, this year our school community has shared our gratitude through multiple food and pantry item drives, and hosted events for very special groups, such as our grandparents and our veterans.
On behalf of Riverview educators, I would like to express gratitude for the PTA teacher grant program. Riverview teachers and students benefit from such grants, which help to provide a more enriching educational environment. (pictures of Fall 2015 PTA Grant winners are shown below)
It is my hope that each of you have much to be grateful for–your family, friends, health, and happiness. Take time to recognize the power of gratitude during this month of Thanks-Giving!
Make it a great week!
Beth Mildren

Read Aloud at Any Age!
There are endless reasons that reading aloud with your children is very beneficial. Scholastic.com recently published a top 5 reasons to read aloud.
- The more you read aloud to you kids the more they will love reading.
- It builds their vocabularies.
- It develops background knowledge that they will need to understand the meaning of texts when they read on their own.
- It inspires a lifetime love of reading and is a great way to model making reading a part of their everyday lives.
- It’s one of the best ways to bond with your kids.
