Lowell Lions' ROAR!

May 2017

From the Desk of Mrs. Larva

Grandparent's Day Invitation

Once again, the Lowell students would like to invite grandparents (and special elders in their lives) to attend our annual Grandparent's Day event on May 26, 2017. Families are invited to the sing-along Music programs (K-2 at 9:30 and 3-5 at 12:45) in the gymnasium. Any veteran guest will be recognized when they arrive with a special pin and at the program. Grandparents will be invited to spend time following the concert in the classroom. A light lunch will be provided by the PTA for any grandparents that need to stay between programs.

If your child will be leaving with their grandparent that afternoon, the classroom teacher will need to be notified. Look for a form to come home soon with the details and permission to leave with a grandparent.

Due to our limited parking available, we do ask that families try to ride together. Additional parking is available in the back parking lot and in the church lot across the street.

Family Picnic Plans

Have you experienced the wonder of Lowell's outdoor spaces? Come explore with our Nature Play parents the forest, nature playscape, and the outdoor classroom. The plans have changed from my precious e-newsletter, so pay attention!

  • When: Thursday, June 1
  • Time: 5pm-7pm
  • Where: Meet at the playscape adjacent to the playground

We are asking families to bring their own picnic meal. All current and incoming Lowell families are invited to attend.

Lost and Found

Please check our growing lost and found collection near the cafeteria. At the end of the school year, remaining items will be either donated to our Kids' Closet or to a local charity for children.

Teacher/Staff Appreciation Week

During the week of May 1-5, we take time to recognize the work of the Lowell teachers and staff. There will be some "spoiling" going on around the building and our teachers and staff deserve it!

Please talk to your child about how he might be able to show a teacher or staff person how much they mean to him. You might ask her to draw a picture or write a letter. He could offer to assist with a difficult task. She might offer to help clean up. There are many little things that one can do to show someone else that they care and appreciate them.

A Message from our Student Council

Lowell parents/guardians,

Hello we are members of the student council.

We would like to inform you about the Pennies For Patients Fundraiser for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. It is Fundraiser for kids that are battling cancer. We have just finished up and we have close to a grand total of $800! We exceeded our goal which was about $700! We are very proud of our students for raising so much money!

We are currently helping the PTA with the Carnival which will be held on May 5th. We have made a lunch expectations video, and we will soon start a playground expectations video. We are planning to do others, as well.

The fourth graders every year take a trip to Wolf Ridge and this year’s fourth graders have left just this week! :)

Action Based Learning

Brain research supports the link of movement and physical activity to increased academic performance. The Lowell PE program provides motor learning activities to strengthen cognitive development. In addition to our Physical Education program, Action Based Learning activities are available in the Barnes Gym for all students.

Lake Superior Tour

We are exercising our way around Lake Superior! Started up the North Shore! 10 minutes of exercise equals one mile. Our map is on the wall outside the gym. We should complete the tour by the end of the year!...

We are almost back to Duluth!! What an active school year it has been!

From the Duluth Parents for Healthy Playgrounds

Saturday's silent auction event (April 22) for Duluth Public Schools was a huge success, raising over $8,000 to remove the tire mulch from the playgrounds and resurface them with wood fiber. Including online donations and the Chipotle fundraiser, we have raised NEARLY HALF of our $30,000 goal.

The Miller Family Fund for ISD 709 playgrounds is MATCHING every dollar donated up to 30k! So we are continuing the online fundraiser until May 1st to see if the Duluth-area community can help maximize this great opportunity for the school playgrounds.

Thank you for your donations and for sharing this effort with your friends and family: https://www.generosity.com/education-fundraising/replace-the-tire-mulch-at-duluth-public-schools--2

Also, in a few weeks, we hope to be able to share news about a final School Board vote on the matter: approving contracts to begin working on the playgrounds once school is out for summer!

A Note from Mrs. Eason in the Media Center

The NCDAR (North Country Daughters of the American Revolution) chose to fund a $500 grant for our library to purchase books about conservation and ecology. I was asked to attend their spring luncheon and talk about how their grant impacts our students. They were happy to hear about Lowell's vegetable garden, natural playscape and outdoor classroom and understood how having fresh, up-to-date materials in our library reinforces and extends what our students are learning in the garden, playscape and classroom. I congratulated them on supporting the important task of educating the people who will be the guardians of our earth in the not-to-distant future.

Ms. Eason

has started a project in Donorschoose.org to add books in Spanish to our school library.
