Nuclear Energy
Is it good, or is it bad?
What is Nuclear Energy? What is it used for?
The energy in the nucleus, or core, of an atom.
Nuclear energy can be used to create electricity, but it must first be released from the atom. In nuclear fission, atoms are split to release the energy. A nuclear reactor, or power plant, is a series of machines that can control nuclear fission to produce electricity.
Pros and Cons
The pros of Nuclear Energy
- Low Costs
- Reliability
- Low Pollution
The Cons of Nuclear Energy
- Nuclear Accidents
- Nuclear Radiation
- Radioactive Waste
Many great reasons of Nuclear Energy
Nuclear Energy is Good!
Many may think that nuclear energy is a bad thing. Although nuclear energy does have some downfalls such as nuclear accidents, radiation and radioactive waste, it also has some good things like low pollution. Everything has good to their downfalls though, right? Well there are a lot more good things about Nuclear Energy, like low pollution. This is better for our environment, it has fewer greenhouse emissions. Nuclear energy doesn't give off carbon dioxide, or methane; two dangerous gasses in the air today. Another good thing about nuclear energy is Reliability. A nuclear plant can run nonstop for a whole year without any interruptions. Nuclear reactors can last 40-60 years. It runs off of uranium, which we have an abundance of for many years to come. Lastly, nuclear energy is cost-effective! Uranium is very low cost, which makes running the plant cheaper. So as you look at the pros and cons, there are both good and bad to Nuclear Energy. We can conclude that there are many pros and cons to nuclear energy, with these facts and information, it comes to show there are a few more good things than bad things.
