The Panthers' Math League Season
by Chloe Larson
Mr. Herem Fills Out Credit Cards In Student’s Names?!
Mr. Herem Helps Students Learn To Spell Their First and Last Names?!
“Don’t put anything about me being crazy in your article.” - Mr. Herem
Needless to say, off-topic conversation is the norm in Math League.
Math League has been quite different this year. There’s no going to school early for practices. There’s no riding over to another school with all my teammates in a bus. There’s no sitting down in a room full of other students while taking our individual tests. There’s no crowding around a table with your teammates while taking the team test. There’s no panicking as we huddle over our papers and watch the timer count down.
Despite all of this, I am very happy that Black Hawk had a team this year! Being able to connect with people is a bit of a rare commodity now, but Math League was a great place for that. We planned to talk about math; we ended up talking about movies. We got to gather around our virtual tests as our team discussed Zoom. We got to celebrate together when we did well! We got flexibility in when we did our meets that we never had before! Now that the season is over, I feel like I’ve been able to get to know some of my teammates, and we’ve had a lot of fun times. Despite the challenges, Team One finished in 5th place overall and Team Two in 9th. I’m very proud of all of the effort everyone put in this year!
* In "addition" to her work as a student, reporter, and Math League member, Ms. Larson volunteers her time to tutor other BHMS students in math.
