Celebrating American Education Week
Each year in November, we celebrate American Education Week prior to Thanksgiving week. Every year we look forward to honoring public education and the many individuals who make a difference in ensuring that every student receives a quality education. American Education Week is a wonderful opportunity to encourage our collaboration and partnership with families. Unfortunately, we will not be able to hold all of our traditional American Education Week activities again this year. We hope American Education Week traditions will return in 2022!
During this challenging and stressful school year, it is even more important that we celebrate the team of people at our schools including our teachers, administrative and support staff, food and nutrition employees, substitute/guest teachers, and so many more.
As part of American Education Week, Wednesday, November 17 is Educational Support Personnel Day (ESP). ESP staff includes secretaries, health room staff, paraeducators, custodians, and food service staff. We are encouraging families to email a message of thanks to the Lisbon Elementary School ESP staff. Additionally, Friday, November 19 is Substitute Teacher Day. We could not possibly operate our school without the dedication of our cadre of amazing substitute teachers. We look forward to our families getting involved in the spirit of the week. Together, we can move forward in empowering each of our students to achieve and thrive.
As of today, 64% of our students have a scheduled Parent-Teacher Conference. This is a great start! If you have not signed up for a parent-teacher conference, please do so by Thursday, November 18. The scheduling program closes on November 18.
Have a great weekend!

WEATHER GUIDELINES FOR OUTDOOR RECESS
Exercise outdoors is healthy and is strongly encouraged. It provides a break from the regular school routine, a chance to get some outside air, and an opportunity to run off excess energy.
If conditions preclude the full recess time, even a five-minute break can revitalize children and prepare them for more sitting and academic learning. Children are expected to wear warm clothing to protect them during cold weather when participating in recess or outside activities.
The decision to go out or stay in for recess is the decision of the Administrator at individual schools. However, the following are to be considered in determining whether recess is to be held outside:
- Temperature and Windchill
- Age of students
- Length of time outdoors
- Adequacy of the children’s clothing
- Condition of the playground
- Falling precipitation (more than a sprinkle or mist)
Generally, it is assumed that students will be outside for recess when the temperature combined with the wind chill is not less than 20 degrees Fahrenheit. Children with certain health conditions may need special accommodations during extremely cold weather. Parents of those children should provide medical documentation and may be consulted to determine if other arrangements are necessary.

Lisbon Elementary PTA 4th Annual Community Night
Friday, November 19, 2021, from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at Lisbon Elementary
We are having our 4th Annual Community Night at Lisbon Elementary to sort and package 250 Thanksgiving meal baskets to give to people in our communities. 100 will be distributed on Saturday, November 20, 2021, at our local food pantry, located at Morgan Chapel UMC in Woodbine with the 4 County Lions Club and 150 for Howard County Schools, including Lisbon families, on Monday, November 22, 2021.
Last year with the support of local businesses and our Lisbon ES family we were able to give 206 families a Thanksgiving meal and hot breakfast over the break. We know the need increases each year and this year we are planning on making 250 baskets and can only do it with your help.
We are asking the families of Lisbon Elementary and members of our community to help in these ways…
1. Join us on November 19, 2021, to put the 250 baskets together, make a craft for each basket, add a book from Howard County Library, and spend time together as a community to give families an opportunity to have a Thanksgiving meal. No RSVP this year just come between 6:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Assembly is open to anyone who would like to help, you do not need to be a LES family.
2. Donate food for the baskets. Please go to our sign-up genius page to sign up and send the items we need to the school by Monday, November 15, 2021. Items can also be purchased through our Amazon Wishlist and shipped directly to LES. Items can be dropped off in the vestibule or shipped to LES.

Signup genius https://www.signupgenius.com/go/5080B4BA5A722A46-lisbon1
3. Make a monetary or grocery gift card donation. This will be used to purchase any items not donated and the perishables. Each full basket with a turkey is about $45 each this year.
You can donate through Memberhub. https://lisbonpta.memberhub.com/store/items/144737
This is a great way for our students to give back and to help our community. This PTA event is the most attended one and is open to and attended by our entire community. Resources and information to help discuss this issue with your children will be posted to our Facebook page as well as there are books in our LES library available for check out. Any family in need or for resources available contact Mrs. Anoff.
Together we can provide 250 families a wonderful Thanksgiving
Our Partners - The 4 County Lions Club provides turkey, milk, eggs, and butter for 100 food pantry baskets and The Grill at Lisbon donates 250 pumpkin pies

Gifts of Gratitude
Starting November 22nd we will once again have our Gifts of Gratitude program open. This is a way to give our dedicated and hardworking LES staff a gift for the holidays. You can give $1 to $50 to any LES staff and your gift will be combined with other gifts for that staff and they will receive an email with gift card choices for the amount gifted to them and the names (not amounts) of the person(s) that contributed to the gift.
I'm the Chef Too! Lisbon Event
I’m the Chef too! Turkey fudge cooking event on November 22nd. Order a fudge kit at www.imthecheftoo.com and use the code FUDGE for 10% off and your child(ren) will be registered for a virtual cooking class where they will make the turkey fudge. Kit also includes a fun STEM activity. To sweeten the deal even better Lisbon PTA will receive 10% on each kit ordered.
Homewood Treasures
Homewood is one of 2 HCPSS Special Needs schools and they do not have their own PTA. Each year they have a program call “Recycled Treasure Holiday Shopping”. As with most things this year is different. They are asking for items to be purchased through Amazon. Students earn “money” through attendance and completed work that they can spend on holiday gifts for loved ones. If you would like to donate items to them, please go to this link or scan the attached QR code. Lisbon PTA has supported Homewood every year with donations, and we are hoping this year will be no different.
Committee and Event Chairs Needed
Many events have a chair who would love any interested parent in taking over to “intern” with them to learn about the event and planning as many are run by 4th and 5th grade parents. Interested in any committee or to be a chair please email Ellen Bockelman 1stvp@lisbonpta.org
Volunteers for School of Excellence Committee Members needed! We need people to work with us and school administration to strengthen our partnership between the PTA, the school, and our community to enrich the educational experience and overall well-being for all students. We will be meeting next week to review the survey results and choose and area of focus to work towards as our goal. We will also work to come up with and implement ideas to achieve our selected goal.
Memory Book Needs your Pictures
If you have attended any events or LES school related activities please send pictures for our 21-22 Lisbon Memory Book to Elizabeth Hall at lisbonmemorybook@gmail.com
