Phishing is a scam tactic used by online identity thieves to lure you into giving out your personal information, such as your account numbers and passwords. These criminals use unsolicited email addresses and websites that look like well known and trusted companies and businesses to lure you into giving them your information.

How Can You Prevent It?

You can easily prevent phishing from happening to you by doing things such as keeping your antivirus and anti-spyware software up to date, as well as using a desktop and network firewall. These measures are taken to prevent phishers from gaining access to your personal information through your computer. Also you should be aware of pop-ups and emails from unknown people. Never enter your personal information into pop-ups or send it out in emails. Avoid opening attachments and hyperlinks from these emails. You should make sure to only communicate your personal information on secure websites, or by phone, if and only if you started the call. Taking these measures will stop most cyber criminal's attempts to steal your information and protect you from phishing.
