What's Happening In...
Kindergarten through second grade artists started off the year with an introduction to the art room and a read aloud: Beautiful Oops by Barney Saltzburg. This book provides fun and creative strategies for how to push through mistakes in art. Later on in the month, each grade level branched out into different "International Dot Day" and Peter H. Reynolds' "The Dot" inspired projects for their grade levels. Both of these projects helped students start to develop their growth mindsets in regards to creating art. Now, students are starting projects inspired by the abstract painter Alma Thomas.
3-5
Grades 3-5 have different beginning of year projects starting with the big idea of "Identity." Grade 3 artists are creating a watercolor self-portrait collage. Grade 4 artists have begun "Affirmation" word designs meant to practice the design principle "unity." Grade 5 artists have started creating name sculptures - the first step of which is to design each letter of their name in creative font styles. These projects have gotten off to a strong start in each grade level!
