ATOMS
by: Isaiah Nies
what are atoms?
Atoms are the basic building blocks of matter that make up everything. Every item in your house is made of atoms, even people! There are 90 naturally occurring kinds of atoms.
How small are atoms?
atoms are EXTREMELY small. to give you an example, a single human hair is about as thick at 500,000 atoms. they can only be seen with a microscope.

What do atoms consist of?
Atoms consist of 3 subatomic particles: Protons, Neutrons, Electrons. Protons & Neutrons can be found in the nucleus of the atom. Outside of the nucleus is the electron cloud where all electrons are found.
Protons= positive charge
Electrons= negative charge
Neutrons= neutral
Atoms & Elements
The number of protons and electrons determines what element the atom is. An element is a basic substance that cannot be broken down any further.

Valenece Electrons?
The valence electrons are the electrons in the outer shell of an atom. The valence electrons are the ones involved in forming bonds to adjacent atoms. the amount of valence electrons also decides where the element is on the periodic table.
