Lloyd Road School Newsletter
January 2018
Principal's News
Happy New Year to all of our Lloyd Road families and friends! As we get back in the routine in 2018, we will be emphasizing the benefits of reflecting on our achievements and progress up to this point in order to identify areas we would like to maintain or improve in going forward. We are looking forward to an amazing start to 2018 and wish you and your family all the best in this new year.
I also wanted to send out a friendly reminder as the weather becomes colder and the possibility of snow pops up, please make sure to update all your contact information on the Parent Portal.
You can access the Portal at the following web address: http://fridayparentportal.com/matawanaberdeen.
We urge parents/guardians to log into the Portal to verify the following information is up to date and accurate:
- Phone numbers
- Emails addresses
- Emergency contacts: add new contacts or update information. If you need to delete any contacts, please send a note to the main office with the information. Requests must be made in writing with details.
If you can't find your log-in information, please contact the main office at (732) 705-5700, or email dgascot@marsd.org.
Closing and Delay Details
If we have any kind of emergency closing a robo-call will go out to all families to the phone numbers listed on the parent portal as ones parents want to receive calls on. Many times an email blast will also go out with the detailed information so it is important to keep updated emails in the parent portal as well. Lastly, the district website can also be checked as an alert message will usually be posted. The school hours for emergency closings are included below but they can also be accessed any time on our website through the following link: https://www.marsd.org/Page/436

We also have a parent session scheduled for 6:30 p.m. on January 31 in the Lloyd Road library. This is open to parents in both Grade 4 and 5, and we encourage parents to bring their children as it is a great way to review and discuss the important study skills together. These study skills are critical for our students to build a strong foundation as they continue to encounter more challenging content requiring the need to not just study more but study more effectively and efficiently.

Guidance Corner: Kindness Counts!
Greetings and wishes of Happy Holidays from the Guidance Department.
Research has shown that one of the best ways to reduce bullying in a school has been to increase the conscious acts of kindness that students perform daily. This may include inviting a new student to sit with you at lunch, helping someone pick up books they dropped, opening a door for someone, giving a compliment, or just smiling and saying hi. These small daily acts of kindness, over time, increase the general happiness and well-being of a school. Think about how we feel when someone holds the door for us, or a co-worker acknowledges our work, or someone takes our shopping cart back, or someone greets us at our local Starbucks. The 4th grade students in November met the challenge to try and do three conscious acts of kindness each week for the month November. In a very short and disjointed month, they performed over 1400 acts of kindness. The 5th graders met and exceeded the challenge and had over 600 acts of kindness in one week. Last month students from both grades learned about how to tell the difference between things that are in and out of their control. Examples of things in their control were their thoughts, actions, words, commitment level, and attitude. Examples of things outside their control were other peoples' thoughts, actions and words, the weather or how much homework they were given. We discussed how this applies to bullying and stopping bullying. For more information on acts of kindness, please see: randomactsofkindness.org, edutopia.org and positivepsychologyprogram.com.
