Weekly Update
October 28, 2022
Hello,
Loudoun Valley High School is starting a journey to become an International Baccalaureate World School offering the Diploma Program and our first step in this process is to begin offering the LCPS Pre-International Baccalaureate program (LCPS Pre-IB) starting in the 2023-2024 school year.
We are excited to be offering this program and want to take a moment to give you a sense of where we are in our process of becoming an IB World School and what it means for you and for Loudoun Valley High School.
Why the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme?
The teaching and learning supported by the IB framework builds the skills that our students will need to be competitive in our ever changing world.
The IB framework pushes students to think deeply and differently about the world and prepares them for their next steps beyond the classroom.
As we continue our efforts to prepare students for the 21st century world, the focus of IB on authentic student-centered learning in a global context aligns with our core values as a school.
What is the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program?

What is the LCPS Pre-IB Program?
We are seeking to become an IB World School. As we navigate this process, we will be implementing the LCPS Pre-IB Program. For more information about the LCPS Pre-IB Program visit: https://www.lcps.org/Page/247003
Where are we now in the development of IB here at LVHS?
This year we are setting the stage for our LCPS Pre-IB program and we are doing this by:
Moving slowly and thoughtfully in our development of the program. It is important we take the time to understand where we are right now and where we want to go. Information, training, and opportunity to learn more about the IB program will be forthcoming and will be gradual.
Applying to be authorized as an IB world school. The process will take us into the 2023-2024 school year.
Where are we going?
If authorized our first IB Courses will be offered in the 24-25 school year.
We will build our understanding and readiness to engage in a full IB program over the next two years and then engage in a continuous, iterative, and reflective process to grow as a school.
Sincerely,
Michael Skvarch
International Baccalaureate Coordinator
Loudoun Valley High School
Heritage and Loudoun Valley High Schools are candidate schools* for the Diploma Programme. These schools are pursuing authorization as an IB World School. IB World Schools share a common philosophy- a commitment to high-quality, challenging, international education- that we believe is important for our students.
* Only schools authorized by the IB Organization can offer the Diploma Programme (DP). Candidate status gives no guarantee that authorization will be granted.

AP exams cost $88 each, with AP Research/Seminar exams costing $136 each. You will be contacted via an email from School Cash Online if you need to pay for an exam and/or any applicable fees. Payments can be made throughout the school year, with a final deadline of March 31, 2023.
If your student attends The Academies of Loudoun, please read this before registering for AP exams. Exam payments should be made to the school locations in which your student is scheduled to take the exams.

TEACHER CADET INTEREST FORM FOR THE 2023-2024 SCHOOL YEAR
What is Teacher Cadet?
The Teacher Cadet program is a “grow our own” initiative that consists of two dual-enrollment (DE) courses offered to high school students in Grade 11 and Grade 12 who may be interested in pursuing a career in education.
Interested students who are eligible to participate are enrolled in the following courses:
Grade 11 – Teacher Cadet I DE
Grade 12 – Teacher Cadet II DE
The Teacher Cadet program is designed to attract high school students to the field of education as a potential career “through exposure to a world-class curriculum and hands-on experience that focuses on teaching,” (Virginia Department of Education, n.d.).
Program Benefits
Teacher Cadet students earn dual-enrollment (DE) credit through Shenandoah University.
Teacher Cadet I DE = EDUC 210 (3 credits)
Teacher Cadet II DE = EDUC 310 (3 credits)
Teacher Cadet students are also immersed in real-world, project-based learning experiences. Students complete an internship with LCPS teachers and interact with LCPS students at the elementary and middle school levels during observations.
Teacher Cadet students who successfully complete the program receive a letter of intent (LOI) from the LCPS Department of Human Resources and Talent Development (HRTD).

HUGH O’BRIEN YOUTH LEADERSHIP SEMINAR
Hugh O’Brien Youth Leadership Seminar - The HOBY Story
HOBY (for 10th grade students only) was founded by Hugh O’Brian in 1958 in response to Dr. Albert Schweitzer’s remark, “The most important thing in education is to teach young people to think for themselves.” HOBY seeks out, recognizes, and rewards leadership potential in high school sophomores by giving them the opportunity to build their leadership potential during a three or four day seminar. High school sophomores are chosen because their age is critical in focusing on future goals and forming opinions for adulthood. These students have the unique opportunity to create a “ripple effect” from their HOBY experience by utilizing the remaining time in their high school career to lead others and lay the foundation for a strong future. HOBY challenges students on not what to think, but how to think.
Today, over 375,000 proud alumni make HOBY stronger than ever. HOBY alumni are leaders in their schools and communities, throughout the United States and the world, making a difference for others through service.
The 2023 Virginia State Seminar Season opened on October 3rd, 2022.
Virginia’s leadership seminar will be held at James Madison University from June 2nd until June 4th.
If you would like to be nominated, please see Mrs. Krone in the career center today. Learn more about HOBY at: www.hoby.org.

ASBESTOS MANAGEMENT SYSTEM
It is the intention of Loudoun County Public Schools to comply with all federal and state regulations regarding asbestos and to take whatever steps are necessary to ensure students and employees a healthy and safe environment in which to learn and work.
Loudoun County Public Schools (LCPS) performs routine inspections of several school buildings and staff facilities in accordance with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act (AHERA). As required by the Commonwealth of Virginia and the EPA, this notification is to inform you that asbestos-containing material (ACM) is present and managed in several locations in Insert School Name.
Prior to the 1980s, asbestos was used extensively in many building materials because of its insulating, sound absorbing, and fire-retarding capabilities. While virtually any building constructed in the United States from the 1940s to the late 1970s contains some asbestos, intact and undisturbed asbestos-containing materials generally do not pose a health risk. Schools are held to a higher standard for management than residences or privately-owned buildings.
In our school, known areas of ACM are inspected semi-annually by licensed LCPS personnel and every three years by licensed third-party inspectors to ensure that the material remains in good condition and does not pose an exposure hazard for building occupants. Any materials found to be in unacceptable condition or impacted by planned building work are removed by licensed professionals. Records of all inspections, response actions, and sampling data are compiled in the school’s Asbestos Management Plan document. This document also indicates the locations where asbestos-containing materials may be present.
In 2020-2021, the following inspections and response actions were performed:
- February 2021 Periodic Visual Surveillance, All Known ACM
- August 2021 Periodic Visual Surveillance, All Known ACM
- February 2022 Periodic Visual Surveillance, All Known ACM
- August 2022 Triennial Inspection (Third Party), All Known ACM
You are welcome to review a copy of any facility’s Asbestos Management Plan in the administrative office of the school. In addition, copies of all Management Plans are maintained in the Loudoun County Public Schools Facilities Services Environmental Division offices, located at 741 Miller Drive, Leesburg, Virginia. For all inquiries regarding the asbestos management plan and asbestos-related issues in our facilities please contact the LCPS designated asbestos program manager, Cristina Windover, at Cristina.Windover@LCPS.org or 571-252-1934.
Loudoun County Public Schools is committed to providing safe schools for all students and employees in our district and we thank you for your attention to this important issue.
