What Are We Learning This Unit?
Knowledge of the Unseen
This served as a provocation to the belief in unseen section of our "Beliefs" section of Islamic Studies.
The purpose of this project was set the children's mental paradigms for discussions on the ilm-ghaib or belief in the Unseen.
Character Traits
The 4th grade class is spending a substantial amount of time identifying character traits and the effects of those traits on their actions and interactions with people.
So far we have discovered six character traits:
1. Arrogance
2. Humility
3. Love
4. Hate
5. Wishing-Well for others
6. Jealousy
7 Generosity
8. Greed
They have learned and displayed an understanding and appreciation of these traits and hopefully will choose to display them as well.
Students also discussed in depth the effects of each of these traits. They have also discussed how these traits actually work together to make a person better or worse.
For example we discussed how greed and jealousy often come hand and hand.
As a supplement and to facilitate deeper understanding of these traits I encourage parents to spark conversations and discussions with their children about these traits.
Lives of Prophets (peace be upon them all)
Students were asked to reflect on these storys and to re-narrate the stories as well.
After the Story of Adam we moved on to the story of Nuh (alihis salam). During these lessons we highlighted Key words which are related to Adam's story and Nuh's story. Students are then challenge to match key words with the correct Prophet.
Students where also asked to figure out the personality traits learned from these stories.
Cleanliness
- why is it important to stay clean?
- What needs to be cleaned? Minds, Hearts, Bodies, etc
- How do we clean ourselves?
- How do we make Wudu?
these are a few of the areas that we have discussed in our fiqh portion of Islamic studies.
Most importantly students observed videos emphasizing the importance of water conservation while doing Wudu. Over the next few weeks students will have a competition to see who can do the most complete wudu with only 16.9 fl oz.
Skills development
- Sequence recognition and articulation
- Creativity
- Teamwork and conflict resolution
- Deeper thinking
These are the skills that we have been focusing on while learning over the last three weeks. After going over various aspects of these stories we ask the children to re-narrate the sequence of events. Very often we see children have a difficult time articulating what they know. Through writing and drawing the correct order of events of the story we are working on developing a students ability to express what he or she knows.
