Censorship is an Abomination
By Corey Barker
Most people don't even notice or even care that there is such thing as a censorship. But as an artist myself, I am limited on the subjects I can use because I will end up offending people. But I believe that, by the first amendment, I should and others should be allowed to showcase their media in there style without having to censor what they draw, say or do.
The reason we have censorship is because the government and special groups do not believe that the public can not handle the
As artists, we are tasked to do the impossible. We are to take a piece of art, and make it so that there is a deeper message than just a piece of art. And this can be from word usage, to what is painted on a canvas.
Even some of the art from the greatest artists who have ever lived have to be censored because of today's society. When they made this, nobody cared if it had genitalia on the drawing or sculpture. But today's society believes that it is not okay to be able to show something that all males, all females, or everybody in general has.
Censorship also takes away the freedom of speech.
The freedom of our speech is being abridged. Abridge means; to cut, to remove. So Censorship is abridging what we, as artists, are trying to show or to tell.
I understand that people are afraid to let their kids to hear or see things meant for adults, but in my view, I don't see how seeing a naked person on a painting is really that bad. They are constantly learning and they will learn one day so why should we shelter our kids to the real world that they will grow into.
Now if you don't want to let your kids hear or see things that are meant for adults, just make them only available to kid's television shows and Kid's Bop.
Many groups have been created, like the NCAC, to fight those who want to restrict artwork and music from showing or saying something they don't like. Many pieces of artwork has been removed from public areas because of their content or message, and this group has fought and won many cases because what the government is doing is against the first amendment.
Not only is censorship going against the first amendment, but it also is extremely frustrating to be listening to a song and you are getting into it and when you get to the best part of the song and there is either pauses or the word is changed so that every person in the world will be happy.
The best art is made to create controversy and teach people about a certain topic. Like rappers are trying to educate people on what they had to go through to become who they are today. The shows "The Simpsons" and "Family Guy" are both shows that are meant to educate people on political, social, and environmental issues.
And one of their big things is to make fun of censorship by having items always conveniently covering them up from the viewer's viewpoint.
So in the end, Censorship in the United States should not exist. Warnings i could understand, but to flat out censor what is said or shown is completely against the first amendment.
