Kia ora koutou,

This week is ‘Bullying Free NZ week’ and teachers will be making reference to this in their classroom programmes.

Bullying is a part of society that has no place and is something that we work with the children on and try to develop their understanding of why it is wrong and how it can affect others. At times, we do find that there can be different understandings for the term bullying, so to help gain a shared understanding, below is an explanation that we will also be sharing with the children:

We are very aware that you as parents, carers and whānau have a vital role to play, talking to your children about bullying and supporting our school to be safe, inclusive and respectful places for everyone. To give you some further guidance in this area, there is an excellent free parent’s pack full of information and tips on how to deal with and talk to children about bullying issues. You can find this resource by following this link.

Below is our school ‘WITS’ poster that we encourage children to use if they ever do feel uncomfortable or threatened in a situation. It would be much appreciated if you could also talk through the poster with your child and ensure that they fully understand what to do if they find themselves in this situation

Last week, the Hub 1 teaching staff held an information evening for parents to learn about the new BSLA literacy programme we are using with children when they first start school. The programme is an integrated approach to developing vocabulary, oral, listening, spelling, writing and reading skills in the first year of learning. It focuses on the link between spoken and written language, systematically supporting children’s phonological and phonic awareness, letter-sound knowledge and oral language. If you have a child in hub 1 and were not able to attend the evening there will be further information being sent home later this week.

Since the start of term 2 it has been great to be able to bring back into our programme some of the activities that were stopped due to Covid. One that we have all missed has been Kapa Haka so it has been great to get this up and running with our new tutor Naniai Martin. Naniai will be working with Hubs 2,3,4&5 every Friday morning.

Learning Support Coordinator (LSC)

For the past two years we have enjoyed having Jo Miller undertaking the role of Learning Support Coordinator (LSC). This was a new initiative for a number of schools across New Zealand and is aimed at giving students, parents & whānau and teachers support with the varying needs of children at school. Please see a summary of Jo’s role below and if you think she can be of support to you please make contact with her - (remember the only silly question is the one we don’t ask).

We are excited to say that we have nearly all completed the teaching of the lessons in the Zones of Regulation curriculum. We have seen a big difference with the emotional language that the children use to describe themselves and their friends. They now have a range of tools to use to self regulate and be in a learning state more often (green/ kakariki zone).

We will be revising parts of the Zones of Regulation curriculum each term to keep reminding the students what they have learnt and practise the tools.

Please read these policies and give your feedback by following the instructions below:

  1. Visit the website

  2. Enter the username (stpatsmstn) and password (kindness).

  3. Follow the link to the relevant policy as listed.

  4. Read the policy.

  5. Click the Policy Review button at the top right-hand corner of the page.
