Ribbon Cutting and Official Unveiling of the New Community Mural at the Morgan County Archives Set for November 3
Decatur, Ala. (October 29, 2015) – On November 3, 2015, the new Community Mural will be officially unveiled at a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 4 p.m. at the Morgan County Archives. Designed by muralist Markus Tracy of Las Vegas, Nevada, the mural is a reflection of the city’s past, present and future and features the work of local students and members of the community.
The mural, designed by Markus Tracy, was a citywide project with hundreds of students and adults contributing to the project. Students from the Alabama Center for the Arts, staff and students from Walter Jackson Elementary, Austinville Elementary, and Frances Nungester Elementary, and event goers to Downtown Decatur’s 3rd Friday this month assisted with the creation of the mural. The mural reflects the history of Decatur and contains images of a train, the Spirit of America Festival, Rhodes Ferry Landing, Wheeler National Wildlife Refuge, among other icons of the city, as well as the state bird and flower.
Prior to the ribbon cutting, city leaders will put the final brush strokes on the 24-by8-foot mural, which will be permanently displayed on the exterior of the Morgan County Archives building.
Markus Tracy, an award winning and nationally known muralist from Las Vegas, was hired as part of the Heritage of Hope program, provided by the Alabama Art Education Initiative Grant. Decatur City School’s art teacher Beth Young secured the grant to bring the artist to Decatur.
The ribbon-cutting ceremony to unveil the mural to the public will be held at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, November 3, 2015, at the Morgan County Archives located at 624 Bank Street NE in Decatur. Members of the public are invited to attend this free community event and celebration.
