Join us for OPEN BOOK 2021!
To all students, families, friends, and staff of KPMS:
We are excited to announce OPEN BOOK 2021!
WHAT it is:
Open Book 2021 is an OPTIONAL all-school reading initiative, where everyone -- including students, staff, and families -- is invited to read the same book!
WHAT to read:
The Lions of Little Rock by Kristin Levine is a fictional account of the 1958-1959 school year in Little Rock, Arkansas. We will read about two middle school students and their families who face the challenges of schools that were shut down (yes, they even had remote learning!) in an effort to resist the Supreme Court ruling to integrate all public schools.
WHY to participate:
Besides the undeniable benefits of reading, we will learn about real & relevant historical events. Plus, we’ll wrap it up with a big celebration for all participating students! In June, all participants will watch the 2000 movie Remember the Titans, which is based on the true story of a newly-integrated 1971 high school football team in Alexandria, Virginia. Our celebration will also include giveaways, prizes, and guest speakers! The date is TBD.
HOW to get started:
Students must sign up with this Google Form by April 28th. Copies of the book are available in a number of ways:
Order through An Unlikely Story in Plainville!
Find a copy through your local library.
Listen to the audio, which is available on Audible and Kindle.
Listen to the audiobook playlist on YouTube.
Order on Amazon -- available as audio, hardcover, paperback.
WHEN to begin:
Now! Grab your copy of the book and get started any time! Students need to finish reading by June 5th to participate in the celebration!
We can all agree it’s been quite a year! Please consider joining us for this opportunity to read and learn together as a community. Hope to see you soon -- on the other side of an open book!
Still have questions? Email Sarah Bond, one of the 8th Grade English teachers, bonds@kingphilip.org.
FAQ’s:
Do we have to sign up?
No! This is entirely optional, but we would love for many to participate.
What if my student signs up but does not finish the book?
Students who want to participate in the celebration need to read the entire book and complete a brief Google Form about the book on Friday, June 5th.
Is it a difficult book?
The book is considered a 630 Lexile level (as a point of reference, most middle school students read between 975 and 1100). The historical events and themes make it a great choice for middle school, even though the reading level itself is accessible even to younger or less confident readers.
