NES MOUNTAIN MEMO
October 4, 2019
From Principal Reckert
Dear Nederland Elementary Families,
Yesterday was our first school-wide reward for filling our school bead jar. Congrats to our students for making great behavior choices throughout our school! The bead jar reward system is part of our PBIS (Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports) program. PBIS is a systems approach to establishing the social culture and behavioral supports needed for all children in a school to achieve both social and academic success. PBIS is not a packaged curriculum, but an approach that defines core elements that can be achieved through a variety of strategies.
At our school behavior expectations are taught explicitly by each classroom teacher. The first few weeks of school students practiced new routines and structures in their classroom and also practiced our PAWS traits: Perseverance, Act Responsibly, We Cooperate, Show Respect. In the first two weeks of school, we taught each class the expectations in the common areas at school: the cafeteria, hallways, playground, and restrooms.
When students show these expectations throughout the building they earn beads for their classroom bead jar. This positively reinforces the expectations we’ve taught them. Classrooms have celebrations when their bead jar is full and as a school, we celebrate when the class jars fill our school jar. If you’d like to learn more, here is a PBIS link for parents: https://www.pbis.org/training/parents
Have a great weekend,
Laurel

Who's Who on the NES Staff?
Christine Mallery, Instrumental Music (Grade 5)
I have taught public school in Virginia and Texas, private school orchestras in VA and CO, private lessons from age 2 Suzuki students to adults over 70, and worked with various other ensembles and chamber groups.

A little about my family: I grew up outside, between Nederland and Boulder, and spent time in both communities. My parents both worked in education throughout my childhood and during our free time, they took my twin brother and me on lots of outdoor camping, skiing, and hiking adventures.
A little about me: I love being outside, being around people who make me laugh, and keeping busy. I'm excited to return to work in the elementary school I attended, and I am looking forward to being in the Nederland Community.
Ann Sherman, Social-Emotional Coordinator, Teens, Inc.
A little about my family: My life partner and two children have spent the last 30 summers in the wilderness of Canada managing a fishing resort. We lived off-grid and 25 miles by water from a very small town. It gave all of us a deep appreciation for the power and grace of nature.
A little about me: I grew up in Indiana but have spent over 30 winters in the mountains west of Boulder. I have been a social worker and counselor, a Sociology instructor, a mother, an entrepreneur, and a community organizer. I love making a positive difference in the world. I am honored to partner with TEENS Inc. and Nederland Elementary School to bring social-emotional learning and parenting education to our community.

NES Snack Program
We're proud to continue our daily snack program this year, thanks to donations from parents, local businesses, and the Nederland Food Pantry. Students needing a snack during snack time in their classroom can pick up a healthy snack in their classroom, provided by the snack program. This is a great resource for families in need and for kids that sometimes forget a snack. Having a snack improves focus, learning, and behavior. It's a little thing that makes a big difference for students daily.
Please remember, it's still school policy for families to send in healthy snacks daily for classroom snack time. This program is to supplement that policy when needed.
If you'd like to donate, please drop off individually wrapped, healthy, kid-friendly snacks to the school office. Please avoid things containing nuts because of allergies. Donations are encouraged and welcomed throughout the school year. Even a small package of snacks is helpful.
Special thanks to the Markiewicz and McElvain families for their ongoing generous donations to the snack program.

Social Emotional Learning at NES
Social-Emotional Learning at NES ( Sept 30 -Oct 4, 2019)
Students are learning how emotions can be mild or strong and can change the way your body looks and sounds on the outside and feels on the inside. Help your child use a wide range of emotion words to describe their feelings and to rate the intensity of these emotional reactions (e.g. pleased with a pizza party, delighted with a birthday cake, thrilled with a new pet). Help them tune into the subtle, and not so subtle ways, that their lizard brain lets their body know what emotion they are feeling (e.g. tight muscles, shaky legs, racing heart, etc).
When watching a TV show or movie, mute the volume and try to identify how the characters are feeling. Talk with your child about the physical and situational cues that help determine each person's emotions. While reading books together, pause throughout the story and invite your child to think ahead and predict how the character might feel next, or think back about which events or thoughts could explain some of the character's feelings. Join us on Oct. 9 for the next Mountain Strong Familiespresentation: How Connecting Deeply with your Child helps them Learn.
