A Message from the Principal
Dear Woodland Families,
Yesterday we had a fun assembly kicking off our Kids Heart Challenge with the American Heart Association. This is such a fun fundraiser that we do each year. You can find more information in your child's Green Friday Folder. We will celebrate the Kids Heart Challenge on Tuesday, February 14th.
This week our students wrapped up our Winter NWEA testing and I couldn't be more excited and encouraged by the growth that our students are making! Your hard work as at-home partners, the teachers' dedication and skill, and our students' perseverance are paying off. Thank you for all you are doing!
Today, we are sending home report cards. You will notice that they are different from previous years. Below I am attaching an explanation of our new assessment marks that are being utilized. Also, please note that the marks are based on end-of-the-year expectations. Feel free to contact your child's teacher with any questions that you may have.
Have a great weekend,
Mrs. Katalin Rosinski

Kids Heart Challenge-Jump Rope For Heart/Hoops For Heart-February 14th
This year, we will hold our annual Jump Rope (Grades TK-3) or Hoops (Grades 4 & 5 only) for Heart during your student’s specials time on Tuesday, February 14th. This event is held at the elementary schools district-wide and not only help students learn about the benefits of regular physical activity and heart health, but also raise funds to support vital heart and stroke research as well as educational programs.
A consent, release form and collection envelope for contributions will be sent home in your child's Friday folder today. The AHA requires that you turn in a signed consent and release form and the minimum $5 donation to participate in the event. Family and friends can support your child’s participation through contributions, online contributions and as well as any business or corporation that you know of that would like to contribute in your child’s name. For every $2000 collected, a $100 gift certificate is donated by U.S. Games to Woodland’s physical education program. This year’s goal is to raise $6,000!
Please make checks payable to the American Heart Association. Every participant earns a thank you gift(s) based on the amount of contributions collected; see the collection envelope for details. The consent, release form and $5, allowing your child to participate MUST be in by the date of your child’s event date. All contributions need to be in by March 4th.
An easy and safe option to help your student with this community service project is to go to www.heart.org/jump and help them set up their own Jump Rope for Heart page. With your help, your student can write a letter about why heart health is important and how supporting the American Heart Association can help save lives. They can then email their webpage as a secure link to friends & family asking for their support. If you are really tech savvy and have a Facebook account, you can even donate your status to our event! The instructions are right on the site when you sign up.
If you have any questions or concerns about collecting the $5, email Mr. Daniels at bruce.daniels@avondaleschools.org.

Implodians Chess School
Implodians Chess School LLC and National Champion Coach Bryan Wilson introduces Woodland Chess Program to our school.
Kids will learn everything they need to know to go from absolute beginner to tournament player in ten weeks. Note that if your student had an unspent balance in their MiStar meal account, that amount will be carried over into the new Meal Magic system.
Learn more about these changes to our food services here.
An additional note regarding Avondale Food Services is a reminder of the importance of sharing any allergies that your student may have with our Food Service Department. If your student has any food allergies, please fill out the form here and email it to megan.haase@avondaleschools.org.
PLEASE NOTE: We have been notified by Chartwells Food Service that Woodland has many students with a negative lunch balance over $100. Please log in to your Meal Magic accounts and check your child's account balance. Thank you for your support!

Positivity Project (P2)
This week, we worked on Perseverance as our Positivity Project (P2) Trait.
What Does Perseverance Mean?
You complete what you start despite obstacles. You never give up.
The concept of perseverance can most often be found in one’s active pursuit in overcoming obstacles. Perseverance is a uniquely human characteristic that identifies an individual’s ability to spend long periods of time devoted to a single goal or set of goals. Those who persevere are able to set goals for themselves and then take active, calculated steps toward those goals. People demonstrating high levels of perseverance are able to handle significant, sometimes repeated, setbacks in pursuit of goals.
Why Does it Matter?
For individuals, persistence can be directly connected to an individual’s ability to be successful throughout their life. Those who persevere through setbacks often reap the benefits of the success gained by refusing to give up. Sometimes, this comes with the added benefit of increased knowledge and skill as a result of the work needed to achieve. Perseverance is also connected with bravery. Persisting in a task and failing, can result in depleted self-esteem. Therefore, it takes bravery to persist in a task despite the fear of failure.
Next week, we will work on Social Intelligence as our Positivity Project (P2) Trait.
Attendance is Key!
HELPFUL TIPS FOR AWESOME ATTENDANCE:
Remind your child that school is their first and most important job! Tardies, late arrivals, and early release times matter!
Communicate the importance of regular school attendance to your child so they are hearing the same thing we are saying at school.
We have many students who have been picked up early on multiple occasions. Important learning, including many intervention times, occur the last hour of school. Please be aware that when a child is picked up before 2:40pm, he/she is considered absent for the afternoon. Any time a student is picked up between 2:40pm and dismissal, it is considered an early withdrawal.
We are taking attendance very seriously because every minute missed, is a missed opportunity to learn.
Attendance Standards
8:33am-9:30am - Tardy
9:31am-11:45am - Absent in AM
11:46am-2:40pm - Absent in PM
2:41pm-3:39pm - Early Withdrawal
Absences
Please DO NOT send your child to school if:
- They have had a fever within the last 24 hours
- They have vomited or had diarrhea within the last 24 hours
If your child will be late or not attending school, please call the attendance line directly @ 248-537-6910 before 9am. The attendance line is available to call 7 days a week, 24 hours a day.
Also, if you are calling in your child's absence and they (or someone in the household) have Covid, please make sure to also call our district nurse, Lourdes Lopez, so she can give you pertinent clinical guidance. You may contact her at 947-235-1067. This is the protocol this year. We need to report the cases to the Oakland County Health Department and MDHHS.
At Woodland, our goal is a 95% attendance rate.
School Attendance: January 9th - January 13th = 91%
