PBIS Behavior Matrix Focus
- Monday - Watch this video to introduce following directions. Ask the following questions to discuss the importance of following directions: When is it important to follow directions? Why is it important to follow directions? What could happen if you did not follow directions?
- Tuesday - Read Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus by Mo Willems (video below). Discuss how it can be hard to follow directions sometimes. Discuss why it is important to follow directions while in school.
- Wednesday - In front of the classroom, play a short game of Simon Says with one child volunteering to be “Simon” and you are the game player. Model good listening strategies such as looking the speaker in the eye, repeating the directions to yourself (aloud so they can hear you), not starting until you’ve heard all the instructions (say aloud, “Ok, he’s finished giving me the instructions so now I may begin”), and speak aloud what you’re going to do as if you were picturing it in your mind before doing it. After “Simon” gives you a few short instructions, ask the class to tell you what they witnessed you did well. Write their answers in a thinking map on the board.
- Thursday - Teach “whole body listening.” In whole body listening, a student practices keeping particular key parts of their body focused on the speaker. Their eyes are watching, ears are listening, brain is focused on the speaker’s information, mouth is closed, shoulders are squared toward the speaker, heart is caring about the message, hands are folded or in lap, and feet are still on the floor (or criss cross). Teach the different parts to your students. Complete ONE of these activities: (1) Watch the read aloud for My Mouth is a Volcano by Julia Cook. Discuss how listening can help you follow directions while at school. (2) Create whole body listening book as a class after reading them the book you created. Use this freebie from Teachers Pay Teachers.
- Friday - Review following directions and whole body listening. Complete one following activities with your students: (1) Listen and Follow directions activity (2) Fall listen up following directions activity (3) Walk the line activity (4) Pages 19-22 in this fall packet (5) Listen mats activity.
Picture Book Recommendation of the Week
Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus! (Pigeon) by Mo Willems
When a bus driver takes a break from his route, a very unlikely volunteer springs up to take his place-a pigeon! But you've never met one like this before. As he pleads, wheedles, and begs his way through the book, children will love being able to answer back and decide his fate. In his hilarious picture book debut, popular cartoonist Mo Willems perfectly captures a preschooler's temper tantrum.
Resources and Ideas:
- Rhyming words activity
- Make a new version of this story based on a similar title, e.g. "Don't Let the Pigeon Steer the Ship!" or "Don't Let the Pigeon Control the Steamroller".
- Think of a 'backstory' for the pigeon. Where did he come from? Where does he live? Why does he want to drive a bus so badly?
- Write an alternative ending for the story, in which the pigeon DOES get to drive the bus. What happens?
- Video of the author
- Writing activity
Fun read aloud of the book below.
Motivational Quote of the Week
you are. Do not try and change it. You are enough. Don’t compare yourself to others. Stop feeling that everything you do is not good enough. Your self-worth is innate; you can’t earn it and you also can’t lose it. It’s time to let go of the negative thoughts you keep telling yourself. Love who you are. Your students need you to just be you.
What the Principal is Reading
Game of Thrones by George R.R. Martin
School Culture Recharged by Steve Gruenert and Todd Whitaker
For We Are Many (Bobiverse #2) by Dennis E. Taylor
Bob left Earth anticipating a life of exploration and blissful solitude. Instead he’s a sky god to a primitive native species, the only hope for getting humanity to a new home, and possibly the only thing that can prevent every species in the local sphere ending up as dinner.
