Sheldon Update

October 8, 2021

Welcome from Mrs. Tanner

Dear Sheldon Families,

Today marks the end of the first quarter of school! It sure has flown by! We are so proud of all the progress students are making and how well they have settled into the school routine. We have a lot of fun events coming up this month so make sure you read the details below carefully!

REMINDER: There is no school Monday & Tuesday, October 11 and 12. We will see you on Wednesday! Since next week is a short week, this newsletter is for this week and next.

We are very quickly running out of extra student masks. We simply can not keep up with the number of students that are coming without them daily. Please ensure your children are coming to school with masks each day. It is a good idea to send a spare mask as well. We appreciate your support in ensuring students come to school prepared to learn and masks are essential to a safe learning environment. Additionally, we will happily accept any donations of new, disposable child size masks!

As always, if you have questions or concerns, do not hesitate to reach out to me!

Thank you for the privilege of serving you ~

Mrs. Gabrielle Tanner, Principal

Items That Need Your Attention

Advisors Excel Coat & Shoe Distribution

Each year our amazing community partner, Advisors Excel, hosts a coat and shoe distribution at Sheldon Head Start. At this event, Advisors Excel staff come set up the multi-purpose room with coats, shoes, hats, and gloves for students to "shop" from. EVERY Sheldon student will leave with these BRAND NEW items! This event is one of the best days of the year at Sheldon ~ you can literally feel the excitement and joy in the air! This year, this event will take place on Wednesday, October 13 and Friday, October 15. Expect your child to come home with their new shoes on and their old shoes in their backpack. It might be a little warm to wear their winter coat home, but some of our friends get so excited that they insist! Join me in thanking Advisors Excel for their incredible generosity! Enjoy the pictures below from last year's event.

Picture Retakes

Sheldon's Picture RETAKE Day is coming up on October 18! If your child was absent on picture day OR you are dissatisfied with your child's portraits, you are welcome to have them retake their picture. If your child did have their picture taken in September and you are wanting retakes, you must return the original pictures you received.

The flyer below provides details on the different packages that are available for order. You may order online, or pay by cash or check. If paying by cash, you must provide the EXACT amount. We will not be able to make change. If paying by check, please make the check out to Strawbridge Studios. Paying online is the easiest! We will collect orders and payments at the school beginning October 13 and ending on picture day, October 18.

This link will allow you to sign up to receive updates via email regarding your child's school portraits. These updates include promotions, additional deals and the ability to order more pictures at a later time. When entering student information, be sure to enter the student's name as it is on file at the school.

Let us know if you have any questions!

Parent/Teacher Conferences

Parent/Teacher Conferences will be held on October 20 from 4:00-8:00 and October 21 from 8:00-8:00. There will be NO SCHOOL for students on October 21 & 22. You should have received a link to a Google Form from your student's teacher. This will allow you to sign up for a time frame that works best within your schedule. Teachers will then use that information to create a finalized schedule. Once that has been done, your student's teacher will send a confirmation of the date and time for your conference. If you did not receive the Google form, please contact your child's teacher directly. These conferences will be held in person, but if you need a Zoom conference, please indicate that on the form. We look forward to meeting with you and sharing your child's progress!

Muffins with Mummies

Wednesday, Oct. 27th, 8:45-9:15am

1155 Southwest Seabrook Avenue

Topeka, KS

Please join us for our annual Muffins with Mummies (or another special adult) event! We are excited to be able to host this in person, on the playground this year. Join us at 8:45 for muffins and juice and a chance for some fun, quality time with your kiddo on the playground! This event will end at 9:15 when class begins.

RSVPs are enabled for this event.

Fall Festival & Pumpkin Patch

On Wednesday, October 27th we will be having our Fall Festival & Pumpkin Patch. We will once again be bringing the pumpkin patch to Sheldon! We are thankful for Advisors Excel staff who will be volunteering with us throughout the day. In the morning, each class will visit the Sheldon Pumpkin Patch to pick their pumpkin to take home. During afternoon outside times, students will be participating in fun fall games and will get to enjoy a yummy fall snack that day as well! Ask your student about the Fall Festival and their favorite activities!

Fall Festival Costume Parade

Friday, Oct. 29th, 12am

1155 Southwest Seabrook Avenue

Topeka, KS

On Friday, October 29th students are asked to wear their costumes to school over their full set of clothes. We will not be able to do wardrobe changes at school that day. Keep this in mind as you're planning a costume that is easy to remove for your student to go to the restroom. Please make sure costumes are school appropriate - no blood, fake weapons, scary costumes, etc.

We will be staggering our parades throughout the morning to limit the number of visitors on school grounds. The parade schedule is listed below. Classes will be parading on the playground. Family members are welcome to watch the parade from outside the playground fence, but due to safety protocols will not be given access inside the building. As we will be parading only a few classes at a time, the parades will be short! Please be sure you arrive at the scheduled time and depart as soon as your student's parade has ended. Parking in our neighborhood is limited. You may park on the streets but be mindful not to block any driveways or intersections. As a reminder, outside food is not permitted at Sheldon Head Start, so please do not send candy or other treats from home.

Parade Schedule

11:00-11:10 Johnston (102), Tinoco (104), Reed (106), Appenfeller (102)

11:15-11:25 Meyers-Lopez (105), Lewis (107), Balbuena (108)

11:30-11:40 Dittamo (201), Dunton (203), Stevenson (205)

11:45-11:55 Miller (200), Gavaghan (202), Schuette (204)

School Information

Extra Clothes

As the weather begins to cool down, Parent/Teacher Conferences would be a great time to bring extra clothes that are appropriate for fall/winter. We will trade you for the warm weather clothes you have already sent.

Student Illnesses

Please be sure you are communicating with the office or your child's teacher when your child is sick or has been exposed to COVID-19. We are following all Shawnee County Health Department guidance when it comes to evaluating students being at school. We are keeping careful track of students who are identified as having COVID, as a close or household contact to ensure quarantine periods are being followed. Your communication is critical in ensuring we have the information we need to keep everyone safe and healthy! This page on the Topeka Public Schools website provides the most up-to-date COVID information for our families.

Transportation Information

Walkers

I am concerned with the number of families walking their child up to school who are not following the established path. It is UNSAFE to be walking across the parking lot and through the car line. It is expected that families who walk their children up follow the path outlined in the picture below. Thank you for your immediate attention to this matter.
Big picture

Bus Riders

It is expected that bus riders are fully dressed, mask ready, and harness ON when the bus pulls up to the stop. If there was a one minute delay at each stop, that would put the bus at least 20 minutes behind. Please ensure your student is ready to load the bus as soon as it arrives.

No Parking Signs on Sena

The city has placed NO PARKING ANYTIME signs on the south side of Sena where our car line runs. Please respect this no parking zone. It was requested by the school to ensure vehicles can exit the car line safely, without impeding line of sight and without damaging any vehicles parked on the street.

Here Comes the Bus App

Here Comes the Bus is an app that will allow you to track your student's bus in real time. It is free on both the Android and Apple app stores. You will need your child's student ID number, which you can find in your account in TylerSIS. If you have trouble locating this, please give us a call and we will provide it. Directions for downloading and setting up the app are below:

Students Leaving Early

The school day at Sheldon runs until 4:00 with students being dismissed from 3:40-4:00. As you know as caretakers of toddlers, the transition to go home is a process! Classrooms are finishing their day, cleaning up activities, eating snacks, and packing to go home. It is very disruptive and difficult for us to dismiss children from school early, starting at 3:10. If you have to pick your child up for an appointment, please be sure it is communicated in advance and they are picked up before 3:10. We will be unable to release students after 3:10 until our bus and car line process begins at 3:40. Patterns of leaving early are tracked just as tardies are and will have an impact on student attendance. Thank you for your attention to this!

COVID Protocols

The Topeka Public Schools Board of Education voted on August 5th to follow the CDC Universal masking guidelines to start the school year. This means that masks will be required indoors for all staff, students, and visitors regardless of vaccination status. Masks will not be required during outside times. Please be sure you send your student to school with a clean face mask each day. This is part of their required dress code and we appreciate your assistance with ensuring we are providing a safe environment for our students! We will also be continuing with frequent handwashing/sanitation, disinfection protocols, and maintaining a social distance of 3 feet.
