WHPE March Update
"Better Together"
Hello Wisconsin Health and Physical Education Professionals!
Greetings,
Happy March Madness. This time of year is a great reminder of the joy and excitement that sports can offer. Those types of moments also happen throughout each school year in our classrooms- maybe just not with the same frequency or intensity. Think about your last "aha" moment in teaching and how good that made you feel or the last "aha" moment one of your students had. While we all yearn to duplicate or bottle those moments and feelings, most times they are only produced through creative planning and effort. What works during the first period of the day does not always work for 3rd period and so on. And often classroom success is derived directly from the relationship building that must take place all year long. When was the last time you orchestrated a team building activity with each of your classes? Sometimes we front load those types of activities in the beginning of the year, but in actuality, we need to be doing them all year long. How students learn in September is not the same as how students learn in March. How students interact and treat each other is not the same in September as it is in March. Each year we embark on an 180 day adventure with our students. Find time to reflect how you can continue to make that adventure exciting and filled with celebration of achievement. It is up to us to create our own March Madness, April Madness, and May Madness.
With warm regards,
Maureen Vorwald, NBCT

All kids want to play. Kids with disabilities are no different. “Ian” is a short, animated film inspired by the real-life Ian, a boy with a disability determined to get to the playground despite his playmates bullying him. This film sets out to show that children with disabilities can and should be included.

SPEAK OUT DAY UPDATE
Our 12th annual SPEAK Out! Day was a huge success, with more than 150 participants from 38 states — but the work doesn’t stop there! Check out our NEW Backyard Advocacy Toolkit to educate your members of Congress about the status of health and physical education programs in your home state or congressional district and to schedule a visit to your school.
We had many positive and impactful conversations on Capitol Hill with legislators and their aides, but there's still more work that needs to be done.
On Monday, March 11 the Trump Administration released their FY 2020 budget which again recommended that Congress completely eliminate funding for Title II (which supports professional development) and Title IV, Part A (which supports a well-rounded education, safe & healthy students programs, and technology) of the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA).
Send a letter now to your members of Congress to ask them not to support the President’s recommendation and instead to FULLY FUND Title IV, Part A and Title II of ESSA — it only takes 30 seconds!
For more information about SPEAK Out! Day and materials to help you advocate for #MoreTitleIV, check out our SPEAK Out! Day headquarters.
