The Saber Truth
October 29 - November 2, 2018
Saber Speak
Dear Sabers,
It is with great pride that we congratulate Coach Hooper and each and every Sinaloa basketball player on a season played with heart and determination! If you did not get a chance to see our games, you missed fantastic teamwork, quality sportsmanship, and electrifying enthusiasm, especially during our hosted games at Sinaloa last week! We are proud of all the hard work and effort poured into a great season. We hope to see our 6th and 7th graders back for more next year, and look forward to seeing many of this year's 8th graders continue to play high school ball next year!
In the next couple of weeks, Sinaloa PTSA will be running our canned food drive. Please keep your eyes peeled for more information about this important effort that works to make sure local pantries are able to meet the need of our community.
Though we likely need no reminding, this Wednesday is Halloween. Please remember that this year, students are welcome to wear school appropriate costumes on October 31st if they are so inclined. The guidelines for what makes a costume school appropriate are below, so please have a look as you and your student decide if and how to dress. And as always, if you have any questions or concerns, please reach out!
Make it a great week, Sinaloa!
Best regards,
Bradley Torti

Counseling Corner
GRIT: What is it? How do we teach it? How can parents encourage it?
At home this week we encourage you to talk to your students about their first quarter and setting new goals for the 2nd quarter. When setting and achieving goals there are often road blocks on the way to success. How can we encourage our students to keep trying and persevering so that they may feel the success of reaching their goal. Often in the middle school years our students feel like they are already adults, but as the adults we recognize that they aren't quite there yet. Part of learning and growing is learning how to achieve success through adversity.
- We like to use the term "yet" with the students and we hope it helps you too. IE: "I don't understand math... YET." "I can't write an essay.... YET." Sometimes, just changing up the vocabulary can change the mindset, steering them toward success.
- Another key factor in achieving GRIT is setting routines and schedules for the day. A student can do this by writing out their schedule for the week and filling in when they will read for AR, or study for the upcoming math test. A free tool for kids to use this is Google Calendar - they have access with their school email address. We can also provide examples in counseling if you'd like. Send us an email!
Academic Reminders:
- Accelerated Reader - check in with your students about how they did last quarter and what their goal is this quarter. Don't forget they can show you this online for a great family discussion.
- Binder Cleanouts - this is a great time to clean out their binder and check those backpacks to ensure they are ready to start Q2 organized and feeling fresh.
2018/19 Saber Club Schedule
Attached below is the flyer for this year's clubs. They are a great way for your student to make new friends, try new things, and even get help with homework. Check out the schedule with your student and encourage them to try at least one!
Attendance Policies
Attendance Phone Line: 805-520-6830 Press 1, or Ext. 7021 (Can call anytime day or night)
Para espanol, oprima la estrella. (Llama dia o noche)
ABSENCES - Parents have five (5) days to call-in, email, or send in a note to the attendance office to excuse an absence otherwise it becomes truant. Keep in mind that personal/vacation are verified but still considered unexcused.
TARDIES - If a student is tardy to homeroom or late to school, they need to check-in with the attendance office to get a tardy pass. Students tardy to homeroom will have a 15 minute detention after school unless a parent calls, emails, or sends in a note to excuse the tardy. Excessive tardies to classes will affect "citizenship" grade.
EARLY PICK-UPS - We encourage parents to call-in ahead of time (or send in a note or email) for early pick-ups so that we can have the student in the office ready to go. Anyone checking-out a student must be listed on the student's emergency contact list, be 18 years or older, and must show a valid ID.
