Apps in the Classroom

In this day and age, technology is on the rise and is making its way into the hands of our children. As a future elementary school teacher, I hope to take advantage of the technology hype in the classroom. Here are a few apps that will take these entertaining technologies and turn them into educational assets.

1) Sight Words First Grade

What is it?

This is an app for first graders that encourages sight word practice. This app encourages students to recognize common words they will come across in daily reading.


Cost: $1.19

How it can be used:

This app can be used as a quiet time activity or one of the reading centres. Students can spend some practicing reading sight words. There is no end goal or product but this can be used as a space filler or for students who need more practice.

2) Math Drills

What is it?

Math Drills is an app designed for the classroom. It can have up to 50 students and it keeps track of all of their progress. Different math drills can be chosen depending on what is being taught. The settings for each student can also be adjusted so those who are more ahead or are struggling more can chose to have added assistant within the app.


Cost: $5.79

How it can be used:

This is an app that would be suited well for quiet time or an activity to do if the students have finished their work in other areas. Because this app keeps track of student progress it can be used as a tool for teachers to focus on certain areas. There is also an area in the app where to students can compare what they are doing to what they have already done and see personal progress. This app would be great for general practice after learning the concepts in class.

3) English Study Daily Prof

What is it?

This is a grammar app. This app has built in studying as well as assessment. Within the app students and teachers can see progress and assessment results.


Cost: $2.29

How it can be used:

This is an app that would be great as a tool for teaching grammar. After reviewing the lessons within it, the teacher could use this as an activity to aid in teaching grammar concepts. The app could be used in a writing centre for individual use and the students can work on it at their own pace while the teacher keeps track.

4) Master of Typing Prof

What is it?

This is an app to help anyone practice typing with all ten fingers without looking at the keyboard. It uses colour coordination to help as well as keeps track of progress.


Cost: $2.29

How it can be used:

This app would be great to have in the classroom as a free time activity. With all of the technology use, typing on the computer is a good skill to acquire and there is no other way to learn how to type efficiently without technology. This app can be helpful to all students and will help them when it comes to writing essays and stories on the computer.

5) Provinces and Territories of Canada

What is it?

This is an app that allows students to locate and memorize the provinces and territories in Canada with quizes. This app also lets students learn capitals and flags.

How it can be used:

This app can be used as a tool for learning all of the provinces, territories and capital cities. Students can use this app as an additional teaching tool. They can use this app to practice what they already know and try to beat their scores until they know all of the required information.
