Beach Bags Food Drive
The division's Office of Community Engagement is once again sponsoring a community food drive for the Beach Bags program. There will be a one-day collection at Pembroke Mall from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on March 28th; however, LHS is participating by collecting from March 13 through March 28th. A collection box will be placed in front of the Library. Please encourage your students, clubs, teams, parents, etc. to donate to the Beach Bags project.
Monetary donations can also be made. In fact, every $3.00 donated fills a Beach Bag! Checks should be made out to the Virginia Beach Education Foundation with “Beach Bags” written on the Memo Line.
New Parent/Teacher Conference Feature
We have added a new feature to our regularly scheduled parent/teacher conferences. In addition to counselors, teachers and parents can now arrange a Wednesday Parent Conference. Parents can visit the counseling webpage and click on a link that will bring them to a Google Form to register for a conference. Teachers can click on the link and complete the form for the parent as well. Just remember—If you set up a conference, you need to make sure the parent is on board and knows to attend on that date! Our wonderful school counselors are, of course, still willing to contact parents and set up conferences in the usual way as well.
I Make a Difference
From Suzette Johnson
I was honored to receive the “I Make a Difference” Award by my dear friend and colleague Gina Wood. We have many wonderful and deserving staff who make a difference everyday in the lives of our students at LHS. With that said, I decided to ask my students who makes a difference to them and why. As expected, a lot of names were tossed around but one person’s name was repeated over and over again. I asked three of them to summarize why they thought that person makes a difference at Landstown. These are just a few of there quotes.
“She is a great example for our school. I love how you can never tell whether she is having a bad day or not which is something many of us cannot do. She great as an advisor, mentor and more specifically a role model. As a female, I look up to her. I’m so thankful I can surround myself with someone who lights the room up when she walks in.”
“I have been here for four years and she has always been one of the biggest supporters to not only my team but also to the nest. She is one of the reasons I’m proud to call myself an eagle. She is always smiling and happy around us.”
“She is always very encouraging and makes sure that students know they have her support. Even those of us who don’t participate in extracurricular activities. She makes some amazing cookies for various activities and makes me feel like she genuinely cares about me.”
I have to say, I agree that Dr. Askew does make a difference to the students at LHS. I feel she has gone above and beyond to bring us together as one community. Lastly, I have had the pleasure of eating her cookies and I agree; they are pretty good. Thanks for making such a positive difference Dr. Askew.
Social Media Requests
We’ve been receiving quite a few requests lately to post various activities, events, and news to our official school social media accounts. We love to do this to spotlight the fantastic things happening in our building and to more effectively keep our students in-the-know about upcoming events! To more efficiently handle the requests, we’ve created a form for all staff to complete if you’d like something posted on the official school Instagram (@landstownhighschoolvb) and/or Twitter (@LandstownEagles) accounts. This form will allow you to submit a photo/video and a caption. It will require that you be logged into your school account, as it will collect your email address, and that you have checked to make sure all students involved do not have an opt-out media release form on file in the office. If you have questions about posts, see Jason Stanley. If you need help with submitting your information via the form, see Krissy Sanderlin.
Counseling Corner
On MARCH 19th “B” Day 2nd/3rd block, the Army will set up a STEM day in the side parking lot close to the gym/athletic field. The Army is bringing 7 large vehicles with various STEM related demonstrations including: night vision goggles, robotics equipment etc… WE WOULD LOVE TO HAVE A HUGE TURNOUT! Please plan to bring your classes down as it sounds like a really cool event – no class sign up is necessary.
Our spring ASVAB test is scheduled for March 26th in the Library. Students can register online through the Counseling page on the website. Once they register, they will receive an email confirmation with access to practice tests. Please spread the word!
Parent/teacher conferences are happening every other Wednesday! There is a new online sign-up link on the Counseling page (on the website) as well for parents to request a conference. Teachers, if you are having a conversation with parents and they request a conference, YOU can also schedule one through this link.
Course verification sheets will be sent home March 18th. Be on the lookout for these sheets for your 2A classes. Students should review their course selections with their parents/guardians, make any necessary changes on the sheet, and return signed copies as soon as possible.
Brickell Scholars Program
