Mr. Chavel Class
Students have just competed unit 6, Inverses and Radical Functions and Relations. They will be tested over this unit on Wednesday, December 3. Thursday, December 4 we will start unit 7, Exponential and Logarithmic Functions and Relations. This unit will include graphing exponential functions, solving exponential equations and inequalities, logarithms, solving logarithms and inequalities, properties of logarithms, common logarithms, base e and natural logarithms, and using exponential and logarithm functions.
Mathematics
Congratulations to the following twelve students who qualified for the Charlotte Math Contest at Community House:
Karthik D., Vibhu G., Haruyn L., Emily N., Catherine P., Naveen R., Ruhi R., Vishnu V., Akhil V., KeeKee V., Eric Y., and Allison Z.
The competition will be Saturday, December 8, at Community House School. Registration/Sign-in will begin promptly at 8:00 AM. The first round of the competition starts at 8:30 AM. Please note that meals will not be provided, so please make sure the students have a good meal before arriving. We will have a light snack during one of the breaks between rounds. The competition should be over about 1:00/1:30 PM, depending on the time needed to complete the Countdown Round and the scoring of all tests.
Reminders:
· Please arrive no later than 8:15 am
· Bring a snack for between rounds
· Bring your calculator (make sure the batteries are charged); I will also bring calculators from the school
· Parents are encouraged to join us for the Countdown Round and Awards around 12:00.
· Please let me know if you have any questions.
· Cost $2.00 per student (please send money asap)

Mathcounts continues for all 28 students and we will continue to meet as the schedule indicates on my web page, MathCounts page. Our last meeting will be Wednesday, Jan 15. We will have the school competition on that date and the time will be extended (probably to about 4:30 or 5:00). Only those who have attended at least half of the meetings will be eligible to compete in the school competition.

Mr. Golba's Class
The 7th grade classes just finished up learning about the different forms of energy and how they are transformed/converted. The main concepts of energy that the students learned about were Kinetic and Potential Energy.
The students did several labs covering KE and PE, as well as several math problems that dealt with the Corresponding formulas for KE and PE. The students took a test covering energy on December 4th. Thee next unit to learn about will be Newton's 3 Laws of Motion. The students should also be in the process of completing their Sci Fair experiment.
The 8th grade Biology classes just finished up learning about Cell Energy. The two main concepts that the students were studying were Cellular Respiration and Photosynthesis. With Cellular Respiration the students learned both Anaerobic and Aerobic Respiration. The students will have a test on this topic and past topics on December 5th. The next topic the students will be studying is Cellular Division/Reproduction. (Mitosis and Meiosis) The students should also be in the process of completing their Sci Fair experiment.

Ms. Gee's Class
ELA 7 - Apprentice Scholars II
7th graders are continuing their Utopia Unit. Students have completed reading the novel, The Giver and completed watching the film adaptation. Scholars are completing a Novel / Movie Comparison Sheet. 7th graders will have a final exam essay in-class on Wed. 12/5. Scholars are completing the culminating activities; including but not limited to: Embedded Assessment: Sharing Your Utopia (brochure, poster, & community map) - to be presented in-class on Thurs. 12/ 6 & Fri. 12/ 7.
English I - Apprentice Scholars III
8th graders are concluding their unit on William Shakespeare. Scholars have competed the Romeo & Juliet Final Exam. Students who scored less than 80% can take a make up test during lunch on Wednesday, December 5. Scholars are watching Franco Zeffirelli’s Romeo and Juliet (1968). Scholars are completing a Film Study Worksheet: For a Work of Fiction focusing key aspects from the play: Prologue, fight scenes, balcony scene, wedding scene, and the death scene.
