Shepherd Hill Regional High School
March ~ 2023
Dear Shepherd Hill Learning Community:
In education, the long month of March has earned notoriety. Although winter is waning, there is still an element of unpredictably as we await the official beginning of spring. Throughout the month, a number of activities will help to make this typically long month more enjoyable. Today, the cast of Hamilton will visit Shepherd Hill. Later this month, a dodgeball tournament and musical bingo event will allow staff and students to enjoy the camaraderie of friendly competition. With the successful conclusion of the winter sports season, our student-athletes will attend a mandatory open house on March 13th to kick-off the spring season.
In the classroom, teachers and students are working diligently to prepare for assessment season, including upcoming MCAS and Advanced Placement testing. In Massachusetts, public school students must meet both local and state requirements in order to earn a high school diploma, including earning passing scores on the Grade 10 MCAS in English Language Arts (ELA) and Mathematics, and one of the Science and Technology/Engineering (STE) tests. Notably, overall MCAS performance is also used to compare schools and districts. As an institution that prides itself on a reputation of academic excellence, we take these assessments very seriously. Additionally, students have the opportunity to earn individual recognition, up to and including the John and Abigail Adams Scholarship and the Stanley Z. Koplik Certificate of Mastery Award.
In order to ensure that Shepherd Hill students are well-positioned for success this spring, we are finalizing several arrangements. On each of the testing dates listed below, we will be providing all students with a free breakfast. In addition, we will be rearranging the testing environment to minimize unnecessary disruptions. To reduce anxiety, teachers will also adjust homework practices during these critical periods.
We value our partnerships with families, and we kindly ask that you reinforce our high expectations for student performance, while also embracing a growth mindset. Every student should receive a good night’s sleep, and arrive at school on-time on each of the prescribed testing dates. Attendance on testing dates is imperative.
These upcoming assessments will present a variety of challenges, but we are confident that our students will rise to the occasion! Additional details will be communicated in the coming weeks. In the meantime, should you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact the school, or visit https://www.doe.mass.edu/mcas/.
On behalf of the faculty and staff, thank you for your continued support!
Sincerely,
Mr. Elwell
Welcome to Shepherd Hill!
Please join us in welcoming Mrs. Jalbert to Shepherd Hill. You will find her in the front office and likely speak to her on the phone when calling us. She and her husband Jim live in Charlton with their two children. Mrs. Jalbert was previously a substitute in the district .
We are excited to have her as a part of our growing and dynamic team. Welcome to The Hill!
Need to Leave School Early?
Early Dismissal Procedure
Please note the following:
To obtain an early dismissal, bring a written request from your parent or caregiver to the principal’s office as soon as you arrive at school. The request will be reviewed and an early dismissal slip will be issued if warranted. CHECK-OUT WITH THE OFFICE WHEN YOU LEAVE AND CHECK-IN WHEN YOU RETURN. Students must be in school prior to or after 11:00 a.m. for the day to count for participation in school activities.
A reminder to parents/caregivers: Students should not be using their cell phone to contact parents if they are not feeling well. Our Nursing Office is staffed with full time nurses who will meet with and assess students who are not feeling well. The Nursing Office will reach out to parents/caregivers if students who are ill need to be dismissed. Thank you for your cooperation.
It is very important to follow this procedure whenever possible. Phone calls to classrooms for dismissals are very disruptive to the educational process. Advance notice of the dismissal with a note helps alleviate those disruptions. We appreciate your assistance!
School Hours
The school hours for Shepherd Hill Regional High School are 7:40am-2:10pm. Students entering the building after 7:40am must check into the main office to receive a late pass to proceed to class.
School Lunches
Universal Free School Meals has been extended in Massachusetts for the 2022-2023 school year! There will be no cost to families for any student to receive (1) breakfast and/or (1) school lunch at schools participating in the National School Lunch Program.
Dress Code
Our community and school take pride in the appearance that our students present. We expect that all students will dress and groom themselves neatly in clothes that are suitable for school activities. Students that dress in an inappropriate manner will be required to change into proper attire; the second offense will result in a detention and parent will be notified.
Access to Student Records
Military Recruiters and Post Secondary Education Institutions
The No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 requires that all schools receiving federal funds must provide the names, addresses, and telephone numbers of secondary students to military recruiters and institutions of higher education. The act also requires that military recruiters be given the same access to students that is given to recruiters for post secondary institutions and employers. If a parent objects to releasing this information he/she should notify the guidance office.

A reminder to parents/caregivers: Students should not be using their cell phone to contact parents if they are not feeling well. Pi Day
Pi Day is celebrated on March 14th (3/14) around the world. Pi (Greek letter “π”) is the symbol used in mathematics to represent a constant — the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter — which is approximately 3.14159. Pi Day is an annual opportunity for math enthusiasts to recite the infinite digits of Pi, talk to their friends about math, and eat pie.
Students will receive a free Table Talk Pie to celebrate Pi Day, March 14th. Courtesy of Table Talk Pies and the math department.
The students in Mrs. Festa's Post -Graduate Program are taking part in a leadership skills training series sponsored by The Best Buddies and MAPFRE Insurance Foundation. Ms. Malika Briggs from Best Buddies visits our students monthly to work on self-advocacy and goal making strategies. By the end of this month's session, students had written their own personal speeches highlighting an introduction of themselves, what was important to them in life, what two goals they had for their future, and why those particular goals were significant. The Best Buddies and MAPFRE Foundation will continue to work with our students throughout this semester on leadership skills here at Shepherd Hill High School. We are excited to be part of this wonderful opportunity!

Gender Sexuality Alliance (GSA) News!
Every week the Gender Sexuality Alliance (GSA) meetings begin with a student-led lesson about an influential individual from the queer community. February was Black History Month. The Black American activist Marsha P. Johnson was the first historical person discussed during GSA in February. Marsha, also known as Malcolm Michaels Jr., is widely recognized as a prominent gay rights advocate and AIDS activist. A drag performer, model and artist who was also gay, Marsha is often credited as a prominent figure in the Stonewall events in New York City in 1969. Marsha founded two activist groups before dying in 1992 at the age of 46.
In March, Women’s History Month, we will be learning about inspirational Women from the LGBTQIA+ community.
February 10 was National Flannel Day! The Gender Sexuality Alliance (GSA) encouraged all members of the school community to “channel the flannel” by wearing their favorite soft and comfy winter plaids to school!
On February 14, members of our club attended the MA Department of Elementary and Secondary Education GSA Leadership Council Safe Schools program for the central region which was held at Nashoba Regional High School.
The GSA looks forward to Spring! All members have been invited to independently attend Natick High School’s GSA dance along with other GSAs throughout the state later in March. See Ms. Griffiths or Ms. Walker no later than March 10 for more information.
