Better Sleep Month
May 2021
Why Sleep is Important
Sleep is an essential function that allows your mind and body to recharge. When you get good sleep, you feel refreshed and alert. Without sleep, your brain cannot function properly and you may experience difficulty with concentrating. Sleep also helps your body fight off disease, process memories and repair cells.
Sleep Promoters
- Stick to the same sleep schedule (even on the weekends).
- Create a bed-time routine that relaxes you! Take a bath, meditate, read a book or journal.
- Choose a supportive and comfortable mattress and pillow.
- Invest in nice sheets and bedding.
- Keep a note pad next to your bed so when you think of something you can simply write it down and focus on getting to sleep.
Sleep Disturbances
In order to get a good night's sleep, try to limit these disturbances:
- Screens - Consider a “screen ban” on televisions, computers, tablets, cell phones, and other electronic devices in your bedroom.
- Light - Invest in blackout curtains and make sure your cell phone is on "sleep mode" or "do not disturb".
- Caffeine - Limit caffeine consumption in the afternoon and evening.
- Late night exercises - If exercise usually gives you a boost of energy, try working out in the morning instead of in the evening.
Sleep and Mental Health
Sleep and your mental health are connected. Sleep deprivation affects your mental health and those with mental health issues are more likely to experience sleep disorders. Scientists discovered that sleep disruptions negatively impact the brain by impairing thinking and emotional regulation. If you are experiencing mental health issues, get yourself the help that you deserve! Below are some resources for you to consider:
