Woodland Elementary School
Weekly Update for Friday, November 18
What a great week at Elementary!! It certainly was a busy week too! With conferences right around the corner, the students and staff have been busy getting everything ready for next week. As a reminder, we will have in-person conferences on Monday and virtual conferences on Tuesday. Student will be dismissed early at 10:50 on both days. If you still need to make an appointment, please reach out directly to your child's classroom teacher as the sign-up is now closed. Virtual conferences on Tuesday will be held via Zoom or Google Meets and your child's teacher (and any subsequent conferences) will be sending links for the events.
With the colder weather, we are going to put a pause on Ice Cream on Fridays through the Winter Months. I know we just started it back up and it was a treat for some students but we also know that cold weather is probably not the most ideal time for ice cream. Thank you for your understanding.
I have included two additional and important updates in this week's newsletter. The first is a reminder about attendance and how being in attendance is so important to your child's education. We understand that there are sicknesses and emergencies but limiting appointments and such as much as possible for after school hours certainly goes a long way.
Another thing that I wanted to share with families is bullying vs. conflict. I shared this last year after my son (who is now in fourth grade) shared with me about others bullying him. When I asked him about it, it was not bullying but conflict and we worked through how he can work with his peers to help settle the said conflict. I received a lot of positive feedback when I shared this information last year and thought now that we are certainly in full swing at Elementary, it might be a good time to re-share this with our parent community. I encourage all of our families to have open communication regarding how their child is doing in terms of relationships with peers. If there are any concerns that require us to be notified in regard to this, I always appreciate partnering with our families so please reach out for help and we will intervene as needed.
I will not be sending out an update next week, so I want to take this opportunity to wish all of our families a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday. I hope you are able to sit back and relax a little with your families and friends. With Thanksgiving comes the season of thanking and I want to thank each and every one of our amazing students, staff, and families for all you do to support our learning community.
I hope everyone enjoys their weekend and thank you for your continued support!
Sincerely,
Ryan Wollberg
Principal, Woodland Elementary

What is Bullying?
Bullying is unwanted, aggressive behavior among school aged children that involves a real or perceived power imbalance. The behavior is repeated, or has the potential to be repeated, over time. Both kids who are bullied and who bully others may have serious, lasting problems.
In order to be considered bullying, the behavior must be aggressive and include:
- An Imbalance of Power: Kids who bully use their power—such as physical strength, access to embarrassing information, or popularity—to control or harm others. Power imbalances can change over time and in different situations, even if they involve the same people.
- Repetition: Bullying behaviors happen more than once or have the potential to happen more than once.
Bullying includes actions such as making threats, spreading rumors, attacking someone physically or verbally, and excluding someone from a group on purpose.

Fall Conferences
As a reminder, Monday's conferences are in person and Tuesday's conferences are virtual. Students are not expected to attend the Fall conferences. If you need to change, cancel, or sign up for conferences please contact the appropriate staff member to set that directly up with him or her. We thank you in advance and look forward to a great two days of conferences!
Report Card Survey: 1st - 5th Grade
Last Friday, you were invited to view your child's 1st Quarter Report Card in Skyward Family Access.
Now we are looking for your feedback!
The purpose of a report card is to communicate meaningful and relevant information related to a student’s progress against Illinois Learning Standards. Currently, Woodland’s Grading and Report Card Committee is working to improve report cards in grades 1-5.
We are asking for your feedback for the following reasons:
- It has been well over two decades since the Elementary and Intermediate report cards have been reviewed.
- It is best practice to continue to improve how we report learning to parents.
- Revised Illinois Learning Standards in all subject areas are being implemented.
Your voice is important to us as we shift to incorporate equitable grading practices and align report cards with state standards. After reviewing your child’s Q1 report card, please complete this survey by Nov. 22, 2022.
Report Card Survey (in English and Spanish)
If you would like to have more information about the committee or the process of report card development, please contact Dr. Victoria Kieffer, Director of Teaching and Learning at vkieffer@dist50.net.

Covid-19 Mitigation Strategies
COVID-19 Information
This year we are excited to return to closer to normal operations after a long journey navigating the COVID-19 pandemic. Students can look forward to working in small groups, moving around more freely during times of play, and sitting with friends in the cafeteria. While things will look and feel more normal, we will continue to have a few safety precautions in place to help keep everyone safe, much like we would during a typical cold/flu season.
- We will continue to provide enhanced levels of surface cleaning in high traffic and high touch point areas, including school buses.
- We will have visual reminders and signage reminding everyone to wash their hands, cover their cough, and respect personal space.
- Masks and physical distancing will not be required, but masks will be provided to anyone who would like to wear one. (Masks continue to be federally required in healthcare settings and for healthcare personnel, including school nurse offices.)
- We will expect that all staff and students will stay home when sick, especially if they are experiencing any symptoms related to COVID-19.
- If a student or staff member tests positive for COVID-19, they will need to isolate for five days per the guidelines from the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH).
- While we are no longer required to identify individual close contacts, Woodland will continue to monitor cases among our school population to understand the prevalence of the virus in our district. Parents will be notified of positive cases at the school through the COVID-19 Dashboard on the district website.
As we have learned over the past few years, guidance from our local, state, and federal partners can change at any time. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) released new guidance for schools this week acknowledging that COVID-19 is here to stay, but reflects a shift toward returning to normalcy. Woodland will be evaluating the new guidance and we will communicate any changes to our procedures with families as needed.
SHIELD Testing
Woodland will once again offer weekly SHIELD testing for any staff members and students who wish to participate, beginning the week of Aug. 29. Students are automatically enrolled in the program, but this testing is OPTIONAL. We have added an option to Opt-Out via Family Access. If you log in to Family Access parents can make that designation. If easier, you may also contact the school office for assistance or please see your welcome back packet with a letter from me for more details. If you have previously opted out of SHIELD testing, your child will remain on the opt-out list. If you wish to re-enroll in the program you are welcome to do so at any time. Learn More about SHIELD Testing.
Woodland COVID-19 Dashboard Updated Daily
Woodland created a COVID-19 Dashboard to help stakeholders understand the impact of the virus-specific to Woodland. Please check the dashboard daily to see case counts for students and staff. This is a live document and the data will be updated throughout the day as new cases are confirmed. COVID Data Tracking is currently paused while school is not in session, but we will resume tracking the data on this dashboard the week of August 22nd.
