Welcome to KA!
September 1, 2017
Dear Kindergarten Families,
Welcome to BPCS! We can’t wait to meet you and your children. As the school year begins, we want to inform you about a few key elements and also ask for a couple of things.
● Our class will visit Fort Greene Park once a week on Mondays 11:30-12:30pm. Please make sure your child is wearing appropriate shoes (close toed and rubber soled).
● Please bring in an extra change of clothing in case of spills, accidents or other incidents. This includes a shirt, bottoms, undergarments and socks. All clothing should be labeled and placed in a ziplock bag with your child’s name in front.
● If you would like to celebrate your child’s birthday in school this year, please inform your child’s teacher at least one week in advance. If you do choose to celebrate with treats, please make sure that it is bite-sized, nut free, and does not include candy.
● We need photos of your family! We are beginning the school year with a unit on community by learning about our families. Please email or send a copy of pictures of your family to dteska@brooklynprospect.org
● Along with the family photo, please answer these three questions for us so that we get to know your child a bit better:
- What does your child love? Please tell us what your child is passionate about or a topic he or she is an expert on.
- What are your hopes for your child this year? We would love to hear about both academic and personal growth expectations.
- Is there anything else that you would like us to know about your child? (i.e. food allergies, school experiences, learning style, routine, etc.)
As many of you know, Mr. Saunders has expressed that your child may switch to the other Kindergarten grade class. We will forward your response to the new teacher if this does happen.
Please know that our door is always open. We are so excited and looking forward to a fantastic year! ☺
With love,
Ms. Perez & Ms. Tyrell

Dear Families
I hope you had a wonderful summer! My name is Heather Murphy Elgin, and I am the learning specialist who will work with your kindergartners this year. I cannot wait to meet them and you very soon! I am sure that the year ahead will be full of exciting and enriching learning experiences for your children, and I look forward to working together to support their growth and development.
Here is a little about me…It is with great enthusiasm that I begin my first year at Brooklyn Prospect Charter School. I’m thrilled to join this amazing team of learning specialists. Although this is my first year at Brooklyn Prospect, it will be my 16th year as an educator. Before working as a learning specialist in Brooklyn, I was a literacy specialist in Cambridge Public Schools and at Massachusetts General Hospital’s Speech, Language, and Literacy Center. While in Boston, I also worked in educational research, specifically developing literacy curricula and professional development for elementary school teachers. Before that, I was an elementary classroom teacher and English Language Arts department chair in San Francisco, my hometown. I hold an Ed.M. from Harvard University’s Graduate School of Education and a Certificate of Advanced Study in Literacy and Language from Massachusetts General Hospital, a program accredited by the International Dyslexia Association. I currently live just down the street and, when I’m not working, can be found pounding the pavement with the South Brooklyn and North Brooklyn Running Clubs, catching free concerts in Prospect Park, and hunting for good guacamole. I couldn’t be more excited to be part of my local District 13 school community.
Me and a former kindergarten student this summer
A strong home-school connection is an incredible asset when it comes to a child’s school experience. Please know that my door is always open. I welcome all of your insights, questions, and concerns; you can find my contact information below. If I teach your child in a small group, I will reach out to learn about them from you, share their progress, and keep you abreast of what we’re doing here at school. (Because I’m with students during the school day, I will check and respond to messages and email before or after school.)
Thank you in advance for your invaluable partnership, and enjoy the remaining days of summer!
Warmly,
Heather Murphy Elgin
