BMI-TESTING OPT OUT; VOLUNTARY MASKING RETURNS
December 6, 2022
Dear Families:
We wanted to share two health-related items, one that is time-sensitive about Body Mass Index (BMI) as part of health exams and the other from the NYS Department of Health (NYSDOH) about optional masking.
BMI Testing
Recent changes to NYS Education Law require the inclusion of BMI and “weight status group” as part of a student’s health exam. This is designed to help the NYSDOH develop programs that make it easier for children to be healthier. Names and/or individual information about students are NOT sent (only a summary). You may choose to have child excluded from this report, if our district is selected to submit a survey. You must opt out each year by January 2nd. To opt-out, print the attached PDF, sign it and return it (one for each student) to:
Lona Cornell, Nursing Coordinator
210 Colebrook Dr.
Rochester, NY 14617
You will also find that form on our website at this link.
VOLUNTARY MASKING
The NYSDOH and State Education Dept. are again encouraging voluntary masking in school buildings to limit the spread of flu. The NYSDOH says laboratory-confirmed flu cases have nearly tripled in the past three weeks, and the triple threat of flu, RSV (respiratory syncytial virus) and COVID-19 exist. Masking is a preventative measure and again, it’s optional. Our COVID Administrator on Special Assignment, Mr. Chuck Miller, has made sure each school in our district has a large allotment of masks available. Any student can obtain one at the health office in their school. Health reminders were also included in the NYSDOH email on Monday:
- Routine hand-washing with soap and hot water for 20-plus seconds
- Coughing and/or sneezing into your elbow (not your hands)
- Staying up-to-date on vaccines (flu/COVID)
- Staying home when sick or symptomatic
- Wearing a high-quality mask that fits when in indoor public spaces.
If you have questions, please do not hesitate to reach out to your child’s principal.
