Mariner Update Parent Edition
Volume 12 Issue 31
Message to families
Mariner Family,
I love our school! Do you love your school? As promised, reading will be the focus of our time together during our weekly parent bulletin. Read to your child, listen to your child read and read together. Thoughts and dreams are important and sometimes you can find encouragement in books and that’s what makes each story so special. It’s important to dream and you can be a lot of things in life, and reading has a huge impact on your creativity and what could be. We can read books in our car, in our home, in our room and books can take us around the world and we never have to leave our house. The new book to read is: Trombone Shorty.
Written by: Troy Andrews

Read the book(s) with your family. Give it a try. Watch your child’s eyes light up as you are reading together. This activity will present the opportunity to read, listen and think. You can extend the activity and ask your child to speak to other family members and tell them about the book. You can have your child research, along with your support and guidance, and write about Matisse and Picasso. You can take your family on a visit to the local art museum and explore additional art pieces and artists. Reading, writing, listening, speaking and thinking are skills that you can work on at home. These foundational skills will also support your daughter and son to go after and catch their dreams. The more practice that your child has, to develop these skills (in bold type), the more confident they will be to attend college and to go after any career opportunity in the near future. Continue building their confidence at home. The time is now. Your children will grow up in the blink of an eye. Encourage them to become what they want to become. Expect them to win. Expect your child to be successful. Expect them to believe that they will learn at high levels and that they will continue to develop their learning. Teach them to practice their skills each day, to keep reading at home every day. Learning together as a family is fun. It’s special. Give your time in this area, as a parent, and your entire family will receive so much in return. Stay the course, and read, read, read, Mariner Family. Finish Strong.
Friendly Reminders: Our Charter speaks to regular attendance and arriving to school on time, each and every day. If your child is late to school, organize at home to plan for an earlier wake-up time and leave the house a little earlier. Your child will feel more confident and comfortable when they are walking into their classroom on time. It is not a confident or comfortable feeling, as a child, when you have to walk in and learning is already underway. Parents agreed to our charter and the uniform policy. Remember to check your child’s uniform each day. And finally, we will continue to do random backpack checks. Please check your child’s backpack each day to make sure they are only bringing school materials to school.

May is Mental Health Awareness Month
May is Mental Health Awareness Month, a time to spotlight the importance of mental health and wellness. Many groups across the state are encouraged to bring attention to the importance of mental health and to reduce the stigma associated with mental illness. It is important to talk about mental health with our kids. We all have mental health. Mental health includes our feelings, emotions, what we are thinking, and our moods. It also helps determine how we handle stress, relate to others, and make healthy choices. We all have positive and negative emotions that come and go based on what is happening around us. These are everyday feelings. Good mental health means experiencing negative emotions. It’s not always about being happy. Recognizing our emotions and managing them in a positive way, keeps us mentally healthy. We need to take care of our emotions just like we need to take care of our body.
The first step in managing our emotions is to recognize them. Recognizing emotions in ourselves and others is a key social emotional learning skill. Emotions are physical sensations that happen to our body. We can pick tools that manage the sensations in our body and our mind. Tools to manage our emotions include:
Deep breathing
Close your eyes and count to 10
Squeeze your body into a hug
Wall push-ups
Taking a walk
To support mental health awareness at home with your children we have attached a self-care bingo you can do as a family. Have fun practicing self-care!
