Welcome to Kindergarten!
Mrs. Schwalbe- Room 103
Lunch on the Lawn: Wednesday Feb 1st
Typically our class plays first and we eat second but during this day all students will eat first. If your child wants to play they can come back to our Kindergarten playground at 11:20. Our lunch ends at 11:45. Please have your child walk back to our classroom at 11:45.
100th Day of School Feb 3rd
To celebrate this day students can dress up like they are 100 years old!! If your child would like to participate please see the button below with more details and ideas to help you get dressed.
Please wear appropriate shoes to school. I will be dressed up and can not wait to see everyone. I will be taking pictures of your child for their memory book if they do choose to dress up so if you do not get that picture in the morning I will get it for you!
Home Journals/Classwork
Here are some ways you can help:
Continue nightly reading with comprehension review questions after.
Work on sounds (as needed), sight words and blending pages sent home for word attack skills.
Number writing and recognition to 20. Reversals are common, but we'd like for them to recognize them and correct.
Complete unfinished classwork/review errors.
Looking Ahead:
Valentine's Day is Coming!
Here are some important guidelines to follow:
1. If you bring cards for one, you bring for all. We have 22 students in class.
2. Please do not put names on individual envelopes/cards. It is just too tricky for us to read and deliver at this age. Just have your child sign their name to each and that way they can drop one into each bag....easy!
3. No food items. It's a district policy. Trinkets are fine.
Academic Focus:
Language Arts:
- We have completed the alphabet letter/sound study for all 26 letters! Goal is to have fluency in knowing how to form the letters using writing guidelines for placement and blending these sounds to make words.
- We are beginning to work on digraphs.
Focus: th, sh
Introducing sight words: jump, one
Review Sight words: I , like, the, we, see, go, can, she, a, is, he, has, play, little, you, and, big, with, for, no
- Rhyming
- Isolating the beginning/middle/end sounds in words
- Retelling informational text
- Character Analysis/Comprehension
- Understanding/tracking words
- Blending sounds to make words, for example, m-a-p or b-I-g, etc..
- Fine motor skills
- Short vowel work (CVC)
- Blending
- proper letter writing, sentence formation (when to use a capital, spacing, period), use of guidelines
- Informational writing about penguins, polar bears and groundhogs
On going skills of focus:
Writing:
Math: UNIT 3 ADDITION AND SUBTRACTION
Addition/Subtraction within 10
Understanding strategies and word problems
Parent Friendly Standards
- Show addition or subtraction using objects, fingers, sounds, situations, expressions or equations.
- Solve addition and subtraction word problems using objects and drawings.
- Decompose numbers to 10 into pairs using objects or drawings.
- Find the number to add to a given number (1-9) to make 10 and show the answer with a drawing or equation.
Big Ideas
- Addition is the putting together of two or more sets.
- Subtraction is taking apart or taking from something.
- Knowing how to add and subtract will help me solve problems in the real world.
- I can use objects, fingers, drawings, sounds, equations or act out an addition or subtraction problem to show what is going on.
-One quantity/number can be broken up into different subsets of smaller numbers (ex. 4=3+1 or 4=2+2).
Raz Kids
Each student in our class has an account with Raz Kids. This is a great way for your child to find reading books at their individual reading levels. We did this in class this past week, but I thought you would like to work on this at home, please go to: http://www.raz-kids.com/
1. Click on the green button "Kids Log In".
2. If it asks you for a teacher code try: dschwalbe0
3. Find your child's name.
4. All of their passwords are the duck icon.
5. From there click on "Reading Room" and then to "Leveled Books". You'll find books at their level that they can either listen to or read on their own. It also allows them to go up 1-2 levels if you want them to challenge themselves.
Spirit Days:
Each Wednesday, teachers and students are invited to wear college shirts.
Fridays, we show school spirit by sporting SEES colors or shirts!
Obviously these are optional, but we'd love to see some kindergartners join in on the fun!
