Country Basics

The country that I researched is Germany and the capital of my country is Berlin. The flag of Germany has three equal horizontal lines of black, red, and gold. The flag can be traced back to the medieval banner of the Holy Roman Emperor: a black eagle red claws and beak on a gold field.

Germany is located in Europe and is surrounded by France, Austria, Poland, Belgium, Netherlands, Czech Republic, and Switzerland. A few major physical features in Germany are North German plain, Central German Highlands, Bavarian plateau, Danube River, and Zugspitze Mountains. A few major landmarks in Germany are Heidelberg Castle, Cologne Cathedral, and Brandenburg Gate. Some major bodies of water in Germany are Baltic Sea, Elbe River, Danube River, Rhine River, and the North Sea. The Germans started a fishing industry up north and trucks and cars are causing pollution. Germany is a Federal Republic and the leader of Germany is Joachim Gauck. The leaders are chosen through elections. German citizens can not be deprived of their citizen ship. All German men and women have equal rights. German citizens get to choose the occupation they want. picture from


Germany is a rich nation with a GDP of 3.73 trillion US dollars and they use Euro as currency. Their main export/import is cars, helicopters, petroleum gas, and vehicle parts. The life expectancy is 81 years. The birth rate is 8.47 births/1,000 population and the literacy rate is 99%. Their main drinking water source is the Elbe River.


Traditional clothes in Germany are Dirndl (dress), Lederhosen (leather trousers), Tracht (garments), Haferl shoes, and alpine hat. The national language is German and minor languages are Romany, Danish, and Sorbian. The national holiday is Unity Day on October 3. A few other holidays are Ash Wednesday, Palm Sunday, Ascension Day, Boxing Day, and Christmas. The main religion is Christianity and Roman Catholic. Germany's climate is moderate with mild winters and sometimes severe thunder storms in the summer. Winters can be harsh with heavy snowfall and low temperatures. The average yearly rain fall is 700mm. The average temperature is 38 degrees Fahrenheit in the winter which is 3 degrees Celsius. The average temperature in summer is 72 degrees Fahrenheit which is 22 degrees Celsius. People have to bring a jacket or an umbrella, weather conditions affect traffic and transport infrastructure, extreme weather affect quantity and quality of available water, and rising temperatures can be harmful.

Compare and Contrast

Germany mainly speaks German while the United States speaks English. Germany's national holiday is Unity Day while the United States celebrate Independence Day as a national holiday.

Similarities and Differences

Germany and the United States are both have a limited government. Both countries have a high GDP. Germany uses Euros as currency and the United States uses US dollars as money. The leader of Germany is Joachim while the United States has Barack Obama as president.
