OLSON OUTLOOK

EDITION #2 - WEEK OF AUGUST 19, 2019

GREAT START TO 2019-20

The first days of the 2019-20 school year were full of energy, excitement, and enthusiasm! We welcomed 412 students to Olson... ready for a year of literacy, math, STEM, music, art, PE, social skills, play, community, and positive experiences for growth.

We remind you to help make this a great year for your child in the following ways:

  • Regular attendance ~ at school on time everyday - 7:40am start time
  • Read at home ~ encourage a lifetime habit of reading for interest and pleasure
  • Healthy Habits ~ get a good night's sleep and eat healthy
  • Speaking and Listening ~ talk with your child, ask good questions, and listen to one another

As partners in your child's learning, please let us know how we can support you and how we can help your child learn and grow!

SHOW YOUR TRUE COLORS! ~ MUESTRA LO MEJOR DE TI

This year we will build our character education around these 6 character traits. Our focus for August and September will be RESPECT. Teachers will define, model, and recognize RESPECTFUL behaviors at home and school. We will share stories about characters and real people who demonstrate respect for others. It's a great way to begin the year as we set expectations for positive attitudes and positive behaviors.

RESPECT

INTEGRITY

SELF-CONTROL

KINDNESS

DETERMINATION

RESPONSIBILITY

Teachers will present certificates to students to recognize exceptional expressions of the trait of RESPECT. These will be posted in the hallway. At the end of the 6 week focus we will draw names at random and award a selection of small prizes. Watch for more info from your child's teacher.

INFO FROM OUR SOCIAL WORKER

Please watch for monthly information from Mrs. Amy Zeh, our social worker. Mrs. Zeh will share resources and information about how to support children at home and at school. Please call the school office to speak with Mrs. Zeh with concerns about your child or to get additional information about resources she may provide.

SW NEWS - AUGUST 2019

CHROMEBOOK LOAN AGREEMENT AND REPLACEMENT PLAN

Loan Agreement Forms must be returned before students are allowed to bring home their devices. Please review the information with your child and sign the form on both sides. Please contact your child's teacher or the school office if you need another copy. (815-338-0473)

The Replacement Plan ($30 fee) provides coverage for any damage to the chromebook. We encourage families to consider this option.

BOXTOPS FOR EDUCATION

Did you get the app? Please help us raise funds for Olson by downloading the Boxtops for Education App. All you need to do is purchase products from the eligible products list, scan your receipts into the App, and send in your Boxtops. Each boxtop counts! If every Olson family scanned or turned in $2.00 of Boxtops each month, we could earn over $5,000 for our school!

We will have monthly turn in dates with quarterly contests to see which classroom can earn the most for our school.

If you have any questions, please contact Maggie Jensen at 815-338-0473 or email olsonptoboxtopscoordinator@gmail.com

WELCOME TO OUR NEW DARE OFFICER

Officer Bill Lintner will join the staff as our DARE Officer. He will work with our 5th graders one hour a week for about 10 weeks beginning in November to present the DARE curriculum, and we hope to have him visit with us at Olson whenever possible. Officer Lintner presents the DARE program to all D200 elementary schools. We look forward to working with him this year!

PTO COLOR RUN 2019

  • Great "welcome back" event for everyone!
  • Friday, September 13 from 5pm - 7pm
  • Meet on the field at 5pm
  • Shirts and colors packs will be distributed

EVERYONE READS PROGRAM FOR GRADE 2

Beginning Monday, August 19th, many of our 2nd graders will attend school an additional hour a day, ending at 3:10 p.m., Monday through Thursday and continuing through the end of the school year. Families were notified in the spring and summer if their child was a part of this program to increase reading proficiency. New 2nd grade students will be assessed at the start of the year to determine if they will join the program as well. Students will have a snack and movement break followed by specific reading instruction that is aligned to a student’s area of need. Click here for a copy of the EVERYONE READS CALENDAR.

SPECIAL EDUCATION SPOTLIGHT

What is Co-Teaching?

Welcome to the 2019-2020 school year! I’m excited to announce that Olson is implementing co-teaching at the 1st grade level this year! Co teaching is when a certified general education teacher and a certified special education teacher work together to prepare lessons within the curriculum. The lessons are presented in different ways and allows more opportunities for students to receive small group instruction. Over the next few years, co-teaching will be implemented throughout the grade levels. If you have any questions or concerns regarding the co-teaching model, you can email me at afosnaugh@wcusd200.org.
