Las Positas Updates

2/25/22 Volume 1 (27)

Happy Friday!

Happy Friday.

It seemed like we just started the year 2022, but we are already moving onto the third month.

While the world is in turmoil with war and economic loss, let's teach our children how to count our blessings. As you know, our perspective impacts how we see the world and seeing each other with open mindedness fosters greater love.

So, in March, we celebrate the IB Learner Profile of being Open-Minded.

The IB Learner profile aims to develop students who are open-minded. Students who are open-minded understand and appreciate their own cultures and personal histories, and are open to the perspectives, values and traditions of other individuals and communities. They are accustomed to seeking and evaluating a range of points of view, and are willing to grow from the experience.

IB students have a deep understanding of various cultures and views, bringing an appreciation of new views to both their academic study and their involvement in local and wider communities. Their international mindedness complements the missions of the best tertiary institutions.

Celebrating February- Black History Month

“Don’t let anyone rob you of your imagination, your creativity, or your curiosity. It’s your place in your world; it’s your life. Go on and do all you can with it, and make it the life you want to live.” -Dr. Mae Jemison

Dr. Mae Jemison was born in Alabama but raised in Chicago. At an early age, Jemison was always interested in space and science. She wanted to travel in space and thought that she would be able to. Some people started to question her interests and passion, but she kept on pursuing her dream. At the age of 16, she was accepted to Stanford University. Jemison graduated with two bachelor's degrees in chemical engineering and African-American studies. She became a medical doctor and joined the Peace Corps to help provide health services in Africa. Throughout her career, she still had her childhood dreams in the back of her mind. Dr. Mae Jemison contacted NASA and applied for their astronaut program. In 1992, she had a fantastic opportunity to travel through outer space on the Space Shuttle Endeavor. Jemison was the first African-American female astronaut. Today, she focuses on inspiring children to pursue their dreams and study science.
