21 Sports ... 1 Team ... WE ARE HOBART!
The Beach Boys might say our winter sports were giving us good, good, good, good vibrations by week's end! On the mat, off the board, through the net or take your pick of gymnastics equipment ... OUR KIDS SHINED!
Enough already ... it's time for BricksCenter!
Wrestling
Following in the footsteps of his older brother Tylor, a 3x state qualifier and 2x medalist, freshman Trevor Triana was first on the mat on Friday down in Indy for the Brickies. Trevor, who began the year on the DL with a broken hand, was matched up with #1-ranked Logan Miller from Brownsburg, who came in with a record of 43-2. In the match, Trevor showed an extraordinary amount of BRICKIE PRIDE and competed with EVERYTHING he had! Unfortunately, it wasn't enough to earn the victory as Triana lost by fall to Miller ... who went on to win the state championship at 106 lbs on Saturday night. This could absolutely be a DEFINING MOMENT for Trevor ... overcoming adversity at the start of the year to make a magical run through the IHSAA post-season, including a sudden victory THRILLER in the semi-state that punched his ticket to state!
CONGRATULATIONS ON A TERRIFIC SEASON TREVOR!
Junior Tyler Turley was next up on Friday night ... matched up with Shane Bates from Zionsville, who entered with a record of 38-3. In a gut-wrenching, grind-it-out BATTLE of WILLS for 3 periods, Turley would come out VICTORIOUS by a 3-2 score!! The win propelled him to Saturday's quarterfinals and assured him of earning a state medal! With only 8 wrestlers left in the 152-lb class, Turley faced Logan Boe from Danville. Boe came in undefeated and scored a take-down in the 1st period. Tyler got on the board and tied things up with a reversal and it was 2-2 after 2 minutes! In the 2nd period, an escape and take down gave Boe a 5-2 lead that he would hold onto through the final period to earn the win and send Turley to the consolation rounds. In the consolation semis, Tyler scored TWWWOOOOOOOO on a take-down in the 1st period against Anthony Walker from Greenwood and then got a reversal and near-fall in the second to seize control, eventually securing the VICTORY 8-3!! In the BATTLE for 5th place, Turley squared off with Bricelyn Coleman from Warren Central. Coleman was tough and even though Tyler WORK WORK WORKED his butt off, trailing 1-0 going into the 3rd period, he couldn't get the escape or take down he needed and ultimately lost to finish 6th.
This weekend marked Tyler's 1st appearance at the STATE FINALS after being a semi-state qualifier as both a freshman and sophomore. Tyler was FANTASTIC down in Indy and earned 6th PLACE @ 152-lbs! In doing so, he also picked up career wins #99 & 100 while on the mat at Bankers Life!! After a STELLAR football season where Turley helped lead our boys all the way to the semi-state, finishing the winter season at the wrestling STATE FINALS in Indy seems fitting.
CONGRATULATIONS ON EARNING ALL-STATE HONORS TYLER! WE ARE VERY PROUD OF YOU!!
Coach Cook's theme all winter was that "Stranger Things" were happening on the #BrickRode. After watching our team all year ... and knowing what we have returning, it seems that NOT having more Brickies down in Indy next winter would be the only thing that's Strange :). CONGRATS TO COACH COOK and his TERRIFIC STAFF on leading our boys to a 2020 conference title, sectional title, regional runner-up finish and earning the program's 500th VICTORY!

Basketball
On Tuesday night, Hobart hosted the Calumet Warriors for "Middle School Night". Trailing 10-9 after the 1st 8 minutes of play, senior Caleb Banjoff BURIED a 3 to tie things up at 12 with 6 minutes remaining in the half. Calumet outscored Hobart 11-6 the rest of the way to take a 23-18 lead into halftime. The 3rd quarter saw some INTENSE action and with no time remaining, senior Tyler Schultz nailed 2 FTs to cut the Warrior lead to 3 at 33-30 going into the final frame! Unfortunately, that's as close as our boys would get the rest of the way as Calumet was able to extend their lead and win 44-36. Banjoff carried the load offensively for the Brickies as he netted 23 of Hobart's 36 points on the night.
Friday night, Highland visited the Friendly City for the final Northwest Crossroads Conference game of the season and a combination celebration of SENIOR NIGHT and WINTER HOMECOMING all wrapped up into one event! The crowd was ELECTRIC as SENIOR Tyler Schultz scored Hobart's 1st 5 points of the night on a 3-pointer and 2 FTs to stake our boys to an early lead! The Trojans battled back and it was anyone's game going into halftime. With time winding down in the 3rd, SENIOR Caleb Banjoff BURIED a 3 to put Hobart up 30-26 with 8 minutes remaining! Every time Highland tried to mount a run, our boys had an answer. In the end, it was a SENIOR who put the proverbial "nails in the coffin" as Schultz connected on 3 out of 4 FTs in the last 30 seconds to give the Brickies just enough breathing room to secure the VICTORY! Junior Quinten White pulled down a team-high 8 rebounds and sunk the last 2 FTs of the game to finish off the 43-37 win!
After splitting 2 HARD FOUGHT grinders during the school week, our boys welcomed Merrillville for a Saturday SHOWDOWN ... and this one was worth the price of admission!
Trailing 12-10 after 1 quarter of play, senior Tyler Schlutz DRILLED a 3 to get things going in the 2nd quarter and help Hobart keep pace with the Pirates. Throughout the rest of the 2nd quarter and most of the 3rd, Merrillville started to creep away from the Brickies and led 46-34. Just when it appeared the Pirate pressure defense was wearing our boys down, Hobart brought the home fans to their feet with 3 CONSECUTIVE 3-pointers by 3 different players (Schultz, classmate Caleb Banjoff and sophomore Anthony Williams) to close out the 3rd and cut the deficit to only 3, 46-43, going into the final frame!! No matter how many times Merrillville tried to run away, our boys kept coming after them! Williams scored a driving layup to cut the lead to 1, 54-53, with just over 3 minutes remaining! After a Pirate FT, Williams AGAIN scored inside to tie it at 55! Coming out of a timeout with less than a minute to go, Banjoff BURIED a contested 3 to tie it again at 59!! As Merrillville tried to hold for the last shot of the game, Hobart created some havoc with a scrambling D-D-D-DEFENSE ... caused a turnover ... and Williams got hammered as he raced towards the basket for the potential game-winning score! After missing the first FT, Williams hit NOTHING BUT THE BOTTOM OF THE NET on the 2nd to give the Brickies a 60-59 lead with 4.2 seconds left!! When Merrillville's desperation 3-point attempt clanked off the rim, our boys STORMED THE FLOOR in CELEBRATION of their hard earned 60-59 VICTORY!!
Banjoff led the attack on offense with a team-high 24 points ... Schultz and Williams each added 16 as Hobart SUNK the Pirate ship for the 1st time since 2004, when Coach Brown was a freshman and still lacing them up for the Brickies :).
For the week, Hobart went 2-1 and if there was a SIGNATURE type win on the schedule ... this was IT! WHAT A GAME! WHAT AN EFFORT!! SO PROUD!!!
The Brickies are now an even 10-10 on the season with 2 games remaining ... @ Whiting on Tuesday and @ Wheeler on Friday night. IHSAA SECTIONAL play begins March 3rd over at Valparaiso High School. Hobart will play Portage in the 1st game on Tuesday, March 3rd.
Can you say MARCH MADNESS??

Gymnastics
I guess I'll leave the suspense out of this one because our girls DID IT!! After hitting 99+ in their last two meets, everything STUCK on Wednesday and Hobart hit a new season high of 101.55!! Two points in a basketball game is pretty easy to come by, but improving by two full points in gymnastics is AMAZING!! Crown Point won the triangular meet ... Hobart placed 2nd and Lowell brought up the rear.
In order to hit the CENTURY as a team, the Lady Brickies had some UNBELIEVABLE individual efforts! Here are their results:
