FALL ACTIVITIES THAT INCORPORATE MATH SKILLS
The fall is a wonderful time to be outside! Whether it be hayrides, pumpkin and apple picking or taking a walk outside-math can easily be incorporated. Read below for ways you can help at home, plus some fun, fall math games for the entire family!
HOW HEAVY IS A PUMPKIN?
For the primary learner:
1. weighing pumpkins and using non standard units to make comparative weights (what weighs about the same as this pumpkin?)
2. Counting the seeds in a pumpkin and comparing
For the intermediate learner:
1. Estimating the weight
2. Comparing weight and converting pounds/ounces, grams/kilograms
3. Finding the weight and representing it with money
4. Writing number stories related to pumpkins
APPLES GALORE!
For the primary learner:
1. *Fingerprint Counting (see below for illustration)
2. Addition and subtraction word problems (using real apples for more fun)!
For the intermediate learner:
1. Fraction Work: cutting apples and determining fraction of the whole, adding/subtracting/multiplying and dividing fractions using the apples
2. Find the approximate volume of an apple by drawing a mathematical model (hint: box using l x w x h)
CANDY CORN COUNT!
For the primary learner:
1. Making groups and practice skip counting by 2's, 5's and 10's.
2. Word problems (+ and -) using real candy corn as manipulatives
3. Making piles of candy corn and making greater than/less than comparisons
4. *Candy Corn Comparisons (see below for illustration)
For the intermediate learner:
1. Estimation (how many are in the bag?)
2. Given a set number of candy corns, how many different ways they can evenly be grouped (division)?
3. Using multiple groups of candy corn, multiply the total amount.
